WTennis: Georgia beats Florida in Seattle

After falling in the first round of the ITA Indoor Championships, the No. 4 ranked Georgia women’s team bounced back in dominant fashion with a 4-1 win over No. 8 Florida in the consolation bracket first round at the Seattle Tennis Center on Saturday.

Opening the morning with doubles action, the Bulldogs (3-3) jumped out to a hot start before securing the doubles point.

On court one, No. 31 Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova picked up the first doubles match victory of the day as they knocked off Alicia Dudeney and Bente Spee (Florida), 6-3. It was not long before No. 32 Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant followed up with a 6-4 win over Qavia Lopez and Malwina Rowinska (Florida) to secure the doubles point for the Bulldogs.

In singles play, Georgia held on to its momentum as the Bulldogs took the first set on four of six courts.

On court five, Grant shined bright as she made quick work of Dudeney (Florida) on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, marking her second singles win in as many days. No. 38 Vidmanova joined in on the win column as her dominating performance saw her pick up a 6-0, 6-2 ranked victory over No. 67 Carly Briggs (Florida). After a Florida win on court six, Georgia capped off the day with a win thanks to No. 114 Anastasiia Lopata’s 6-2, 6-3 clincher on court four over Sara Dahlstrom.

The Bulldogs will resume action at the ITA Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Seattle Tennis Center. Georgia will compete in the second round of the consolation bracket and face an opponent to be named after the conclusion of day two of the competition.

MBB: Dawgs Fall in Fayetteville

The Georgia men’s basketball team fell to Arkansas by a 78-75 score on Saturday evening at Bud Walton Arena.

Silas Demary Jr. led all scorers with 19 points, three assists and a pair of steals. Justin Hill reached 17 points 10-for-11 from the free throw line, while Russel Tchewa reached 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Georgia (14-10, 4-7 SEC) outscored Arkansas (12-11, 3-7 SEC) in paint points, 44-42, but the Razorbacks earned more bench points than the Bulldogs, 44-20, marking just the fourth time this season Georgia was outscored in the statistic.

The Bulldogs held a four-point advantage after converting on a pair of free throws from Tchewa 11 minutes into the contest. The Razorbacks responded with 10 unanswered points and eventually stretched the lead out to seven toward the end of the half. Dylan James cut it to five with a first-half buzzer-beater, putting the score at 34-29 in favor of Arkansas. Georgia was unable to stop Arkansas to start the second half, with the Razorback knocking down consecutive 3-pointers and growing their lead out to 12. The Bulldogs managed to cut the deficit to just two points thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from James and Blue Cain. The teams kept it close until under the four-minute mark when Hill knocked down a step-back deep ball and gave Georgia its first lead of the half, 66-65. Arkansas pulled ahead one final time with a shot from beyond the arc by El Ellis, carrying the lead to the final buzzer. 

Georgia will return to Stegeman Coliseum to play Florida on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. with the contest to be broadcasted by the SEC Network. The Bulldogs previously fell to the Gators in overtime, 102-98, on Jan. 27 at the Stephen O’Connell Center.

• Silas Demary Jr. totaled 19 points to lead all scorers, marking the second-highest point total for the freshman in his collegiate career.

• Georgia finished with 44 points in the point, which is tied for the fourth-most in a game this season.

SB: Georgia defeated Murray State, 2-0, and Purdue, 6-1, on day two of the Red & Black Showcase Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium

The sixth-ranked Georgia softball team defeated Murray State, 2-0, and Purdue, 6-1, on day two of the Red & Black Showcase Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium.

Georgia stays undefeated at 4-0 on the young season. The Georgia pitching staff has allowed just one run in 26 innings of work in the circle to begin the season while holding opponents to a .138 average.

No. 6 Georgia 2, Murray State 0

The Bulldogs edged Murray State 2-0 in their first game of the day, recording the third-straight shutout of the season. Madison Kerpics (1-0) went the distance in her first start, allowing no runs on just two hits. She struck out three Racers (1-3) in the game.

Sydney Kuma was the lone Dog with multiple hits, scattering a couple. Lyndi Rae Davis’ hit in the fifth proved the difference maker in the game.

Georgia loaded the bases with two out in the home half of the fifth. Davis singled to short. On the play, Jaydyn Goodwin scored. The shortstop’s throw to third was off the mark, allowing Ellie Armistead to score and make it a 2-0 lead for the Bulldogs.

The 2-0 advantage held as Kerpics allowed just one runner aboard the remainder of the game en route to the shutout.

No. 6 Georgia, Purdue 1

Sydney Chambley blasted two home runs and drove in three to lift the Bulldogs over Purdue (2-1) in the nightcap, 6-1. Kuma added two hits in the game as well.

Georgia used four pitchers against the Boilermakers. Riley Orcutt made her first start, working a 1-2-3 first inning. Shelby Walters (2-0) earned the victory, working three scoreless innings, allowing two hits, and striking out seven of the 11 batters she faced. Rachel Gibson made her Georgia debut, pitching one and a third innings, allowing a run on three hits. Lilli Backes earned her first Georgia save, working out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and pitching the final one and two-thirds innings.

Chambley’s first home run of the season put Georgia ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second.

Chambley’s second homer of the game, this one a two-run shot to center, widened the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The offense kept rolling in the inning when Emily Digby drove in Jaydyn Goodwin with a double to right center. A sac fly off the bat of Armistead brought the lead to 5-0.

A solo Kuma blast in the fifth lengthened the Dogs’ lead to 6-0 in the fifth.

Purdue used a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to break up Georgia’s shutout streak, 6-1. Backes entered after the walk and got out of the jam.

Georgia will face off against Purdue Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. in the final game of the Red & Black Showcase at Jack Turner Stadium.
