BSB: Dawgs Battle Kennesaw State Tonight in Marietta

Eighth-ranked Georgia faces Kennesaw State Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Marietta at S. Walter Kelly Sr., Memorial Field.

The Bulldogs went 3-1 during Opening Weekend in Wilmington, N.C. The Bulldogs went 2-0 against Quinnipiac and 1-1 against host UNC Wilmington with all four games held at Brooks Field. The Bulldogs posted a .413 on base percentage with 30 walks and 15 hit-by-pitches while hitting just .200 with two home runs in very windy conditions. Georgia pitchers held opponents to a .165 average and a 3.09 ERA. In the 6-2 loss Sunday, the bullpen provided 7.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Georgia fielded .993.

Overall, it marked the first time since 2013 that Georgia opened a season on the road. Year two of the Wes Johnson era features five straight games away from Foley Field. The Owls (1-2) are playing all their home games at S. Walter Kelly Sr., Memorial Field due to stadium renovations. KSU dropped two of three to Rutgers this past weekend. The Owls top returnees include Chris Cole and Jackson Chirello. Cole and Donovan Cash hit .300 against Rutgers to lead KSU. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with KSU 24-11.

Georgia’s home opener is Thursday when it begins a four-game series with University of Illinois Chicago (1-2). The Flames face The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., on Monday. They lost 9-1 to the Bulldogs on Opening Day and split a pair with Charleston Southern.

A Look At The Lineup

In the four-game opening weekend in Wilmington, N.C., Georgia’s lineup featured eight of the same starting nine with catcher the lone exception. Kolby Branch (SS), senior Robbie Burnett (2B), sophomore preseason All-American Tre Phelps (RF), Kentucky graduate Nolan McCarthy (CF), Duke graduate Devin Obee (LF), senior preseason All-SEC Slate Alford (3B/2B), Miami, Ohio graduate Ryland Zaborowski (1B) and FAU graduate Christian Adams (DH) comprised most of the lineup. Catcher Henry Hunter started three games while Daniel Jackson made one start behind the plate.

*Burnett batted a team-best .444 with a .737 OB%, 3 RBI and was 7-for-7 in stolen bases. Last year, Georgia’s SB leader finished with just four (Paul Toetz, Clayton Chadwick).

*Burnett reached base safely in his first 10 plate appearances.

*McCarthy ranked second with a .357 average (5-for-14) with a double and triple.

*Obee hit the team’s only two home runs and drove in a team-high six.

*Alford drew eight walks and two HBP.

Tuesday Pitching Matchup

Neither team has announced a starter. Georgia used a staff approach in midweeks in ’24.
