At the plate, Georgia was held to three hits in the game, combined for by Jaydyn Goodwin, Jaiden Fields, and Sydney Kuma.

In the first, a double by Stanford’s (7-2) catcher Aly Kaneshiro scored Emily Jones all the way from first to start off the game.

The Cardinal led the Bulldogs 1-0 until the fifth inning when a series of hits by Jones, Emily Schultz, and Sydney Steele – aided by a Georgia fielding error – increased the Stanford lead to 3-0.

Stanford’s NiJaree Canady held Georgia scoreless in the sixth and seventh to capture the win for the Cardinal.

No. 13 Georgia 9, St. John’s 7

The Bulldogs’ offense narrowly out-hit the Red Storm 8-7 in the nightcap. Freshman Goodwin went 3-for-4 and scored three times. Senior Sara Mosely blasted two two-run home runs and touched home three times. Kuma provided the other big hit in the game, a three-run double in the fifth.

Sophomore Kylie Macy worked a total of three and two-thirds innings, starting the game then re-entering in the seventh. She earned Georgia’s first save of the season and allowed four total hits, one run, and struck out three. Freshman Destin Howard (1-0) earned the win in relief, the first of her career, working one and one-third scoreless innings.

St. John’s (1-5) manufactured a run in the top of the second to go ahead 1-0. A leadoff walk was bunted to second, took third on a base hit, and scored on an RBI single to right off the bat of Natalie Alheidt.

The Dogs broke through in the bottom of the third with five runs. With bases loaded and two out, a walk to Sydney Chambley pushed in a run to tie the game 1-1. Kuma blasted a double to right field to clear the bases and go ahead 4-1. She immediately scored on a base hit off the bat of Lyndi Rae Davis to complete the five-run inning, 5-1.

A two-run blast off the bat of Mosley widened Georgia’s lead to six in the fourth, 7-1.

St. John’s London Jarrard narrowed the Bulldog lead with a three-run home run to right-center in the top of the fifth, 7-4.

Mosley’s second home run of the game, another two-run shot in the fifth, widened the lead back to 9-4 for the Dogs.

A pair of home runs in the top of the seventh cut the lead to 9-7. Macy re-entered for Riley Orcutt to close the game and secure her first save of the 2023 season.

Georgia is back in action Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m. against St. John’s. The Bulldogs will face off against Charlotte in the final game of the Red & Black Showcase immediately after at Jack Turner Stadium.

MBB: UGA 59, Bama 108

The University of Georgia men’s basketball team fell to top-ranked Alabama 108-59 on Saturday evening before 13,474 spectators at Coleman Coliseum.

Junior Justin Hill led Georgia (16-11, 6-8 SEC) in scoring with 17 points, while senior Terry Roberts tallied 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Fifth-year Braelen Bridges pitched in with 10 points and eight boards. On the evening, the Bulldogs shot 37.5 percent from the field.

“It will be hard to forget about this one, to be honest with you,” said Georgia head coach Mike White following the game. “I did a poor job preparing our guys. We looked rattled from the tip. Alabama is obviously a better basketball team than we are. They were terrific. As good of an offensive basketball team as I’ve seen live or competed against in our league. That said, we didn’t help ourselves. They didn’t play a team that defended at a high-level today.”

After trading baskets in the opening minutes, Alabama (23-4, 13-1 SEC) went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-4 lead at the 16-minute mark. The Bulldogs answered with a pair of buckets by Hill and Roberts, but the Crimson Tide found their stride and went on a 12-0 run to take a 20-point lead. Alabama extended its lead to 25 at the under-eight mark before taking a 54-25 advantage into the half.

Coming out of the locker room, the Crimson Tide quickly extended their lead to 37, while Georgia continued to attack the paint. With the contest drawing to a close, the Bulldogs slightly narrowed the final margin thanks to a 3-pointer and layup by Hill. Alabama would go on to win 108-59.

Georgia returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when the Bulldogs travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks. Tip is set for 9:00 p.m. EST and the game will be aired on SEC Network.
