Baseball: Dawgs take on the Panthers in Atlanta tonight

Georgia faces its first road test of the 2024 season Tuesday when it battles Georgia State at the GSU Baseball Complex. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. ET, and it will be broadcast on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

The Bulldogs (3-0) swept UNC Asheville at home this past weekend while the Panthers (1-2) dropped a road series at the University of New Orleans.

Series History: Georgia leads 47-9 dating to 1971. The teams split a two-game set last season. The Panthers snapped Georgia’s nine-game winning streak in the series when it beat the Bulldogs 9-7 in Athens. Georgia won 8-3 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville.

The Pitching Matchup: 

Georgia’s Jarvis Evans, LHP, So. (0-0, 0.00) vs. GSU’s Jack Butler, RHP, RFr. (Debut)

Evans will be making his third career start. He is a 6-4, 216-pound native of Buford. So far this season, the Bulldogs have taken a staff approach to each game with no starter going more than four innings.

                Last year in his first career start, Evans tallied a career-high six strikeouts in 3.2 innings against Kennesaw State but did not factor in the decision. His other start came against No. 5 LSU where he got a no decision (3.2 IP, 4H, 2R, 4K).

Evans was one of 11 Bulldog pitchers to make an appearance in the Asheville series. He tossed two scoreless and hitless innings with two walks and two strikeouts in the season opener last Friday.

Bulldog Hitters To Watch

*It was a successful debut of the Wes Johnson era as Georgia outscored UNC Asheville 38-7 including the final two games ending early due to the 10-run rule.

*The Bulldogs (3-0) hit .358 (34-for-95) with eight doubles and 10 home runs.

*Three Bulldogs hit two home runs each (Dylan Goldstein, Fernando Gonzalez & Logan Jordan) while junior infielder Slate Alford smashed three home runs to go with nine RBI.

*Georgia’s lineup boasts one of the nation’s top returning players in consensus All-American Charlie Condon. A redshirt sophomore on the Golden Spikes Award Watch List, Condon is projected to be a 1st Round pick in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. He carries multiple gloves as he will see action at first base, third base and in the outfield. He led the team in batting in the series sweep of UNC Asheville, hitting .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, three walks plus a .733 OB%.

*Junior infielder Slate Alford earned SEC Co-Player of the Week honors. The leadoff hitter posted an SEC best 15 total bases, three home runs and nine RBI to pace the offense. He made a pair of starts at third base and one at second. Alford and Condon have hit safely in all three games this season.

*Graduate outfielder Dylan Goldstein ranks second on the team with eight RBI to go with a pair of homers.

Baseball: Slate Alford named the SEC Co-Player of the Week

University of Georgia junior Slate Alford has been named the Southeastern Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Alford notched an SEC best 15 total bases, nine RBI and three home runs in leading Georgia to a 3-0 sweep of UNC Asheville. A 6-3, 236-pound native of Madison, Ala., he batted .429 (6-for-14) in the series and provided perfect fielding in seven total chances. He made two starts at third base and one at second base.

Alford’s first two hits as a Georgia Bulldog were home runs on Opening Day. Then, he provided a three-run walk-off home run to run-rule UNC Asheville in the eighth inning of game two. He collected three hits and three RBI in this past Sunday’s win.

Along with Alford, the SEC honored catcher/DH Hayden Travinski (LSU) who batted .636-1-4 plus pitchers Carson Myers (Auburn), AJ Causey (Tennessee) and freshman Justin Lebron (Alabama).

Up next, Georgia (3-0) travels to Atlanta on Tuesday to face Georgia State (1-2). First pitch will be at 3 p.m. and be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. 

T&F: Keturah Orji collects 10th national title at the 2024 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships

Keturah Orji edged former Lady Bulldog Jasmine Moore to collect her 10^th overall national triple jump title to highlight the 2024 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., over the weekend.

Orji, a native of Mount Olive, N.J., and current Mizuno professional athlete, traveled a season best 14.50 meters/47 feet, 7 inches to capture her third straight USA Indoor triple jump title and fourth overall.  Orji has another six USA Outdoor crowns on her resume as well.

After Moore surged ahead in the fifth of six rounds with a mark of 14.43m/47-4.25, Orji answered later that round with her winning mark.  This is expected to be Orji’s final year competing as she works towards making yet another U.S. Olympic team.  The 2018 Bowerman winner competed for the Lady Bulldogs from 2015 to 2018 and won eight NCAA individual championships, nine Southeastern Conference crowns and broke American and collegiate records along the way.

Former Southern California standout and current Georgia assistant coach Bailey Lear finished with a season best time to take fourth in the women’s 400-meter dash final at the meet.  Lear, who had the third-fastest qualifying time with a then season best 52.13, bettered that 2024 best to 52.06 to take fourth place in the final round.

Matthew Boling completed his decorated Bulldog career in 2023 and was fifth in the 400m final over the weekend with a 46.19.  Boling had a time of 45.86 in the prelims to advance.  Also of note, Boling’s former teammate and relay partner Elija Godwin was 16^th in the qualifying round (47.87).

Also, former Bulldog All-American Kendal Williams finished 15^th (6.67) in the opening rounds of the 60m while Christian Harrison, a former 800m runner for Georgia, was 13^th in the qualifying round of the 800m with a 1:49.30.

The current crop of Georgia track and field team members will compete at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 23-24).
