BSB: Georgia Opens A Three-Game Series with Samford Friday

Ninth-ranked Georgia opens a three-game series with Samford Friday at Foley Field. First pitch will be at 3:02 p.m. and will be available on SECN+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

 

 

 

 

The Bulldogs (3-1) posted a 2-1 series win over Wright State last weekend and then beat USC Upstate 12-6 on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Samford led Alabama 2-0, going to the eighth inning before falling 3-2. Samford is 2-2 on the season. 

Georgia leads the all-time series with Samford here 2-1 (W, 14-3 in 1988, W, 15-3 in 1999 and L, 2-1 in 2000). Samford is the favorite to capture the Southern Conference (SoCon) title this season in a vote of league coaches. They last won the SoCon and tournament titles in 2023. They have made four NCAA Tournaments in the past 15 years and have averaged 34.9 wins in that span.

On Saturday, senior Matt Scott will make his first start as a Bulldog and 39th of his career after spending the previous three seasons at Stanford. Scott replaces injured sophomore LHP/OF Kenny Ishikawa (1-0, 0.00 ERA). He is sidelined after getting hit by a pitch while batting against USC Upstate on Wednesday. 

Bulldog Hitters To Watch

                  Junior third baseman Tre Phelps (.357-2-4) has hit safely in every game this year and extended his hitting streak to 18 games (dating to the 2025 season). He smacked home runs in games one and two followed by a double, going 3-for-10 with four RBI and a .778 OB% against the Raiders last weekend. Junior C/OF Daniel Jackson (.313-3-6) smashed two home runs, tallied five RBI, a stolen base and threw out four would-be base stealers versus WSU. He hit his team-best third home run in the win over USC Upstate this past Wednesday.

                 Freshman OF Cole Johnson (.571-0-4) leads the team in batting, followed by senior INF/OF Ryan Black (.556-2-4). Johnson and Black combined to go 5-for-8 with six RBI in the win over USC Upstate.

WBB: Bulldogs Fall to No. 11-Ranked Oklahoma Sooners, 71-67

The No. 24-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs fell to the No. 11-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, 71-67, in a back-and-forth game Thursday night. Mia Woolfolk led the Lady Bulldogs, setting a new career high with 29 points.

Notable

  • Woolfolk led the charge for the Bulldogs with 29 points, earning a career high, contributing nine rebounds and a block. Dani Carnegie and Trinity Turner joined Woolfolk in double-digits with 10 and 14 points, respectively. Turner also reached 100 career steals.
  • Georgia held Oklahoma to its second lowest scoring performance in SEC play and its third lowest of the season. 
  • The Lady Bulldogs held the Sooners below their season average in points (87.3), rebounds (48.6) and assists (20.4)
  • Georgia went on a 7-0 run to open up the third quarter and close the 10-point gap at the half.The Lady Bulldogs then made it a two-point game late in the fourth quarter. 
  • Despite Thursday’s loss, Georgia leads the overall series against the Sooners 5-4.
