SOFTBALL: UGA Blasts Perdue 8-0

Jaiden Fields

The 13th-ranked Georgia softball team earned a shutout, run-rule win over the Purdue Boilermakers to conclude the 15th Annual Red & Black Showcase Sunday at Jack Turner Stadium.

Georgia’s eight runs came on 12 hits, led by a 3-for-3, two-RBI performance from redshirt-junior Jaiden Fields. Senior CJ Landrum picked up two hits and two runs at the bottom of Georgia’s lineup. Sophomore Sydney Chambley drove in three runs with a home run and a sac fly in the contest.

Sophomore Madison Kerpics (3-1) earned her third win in the circle, working the complete five innings in the shutout, allowing just two hits. She struck out nine Boilermakers (6-4) in her outing.

The offense exploded for five runs in Georgia’s half of the third inning. The scoring started with a two-run home run that cleared the seating in center off the bat of Chambley. Later, freshman Lyndi Rae Davis drove in Sydney Kuma to lengthen the Bulldogs’ lead to 3-0. The next batter, Fields launched a two-run home run of her own to left-center to conclude a five spot in the third for Georgia.

Ellie Armistead continued her strong weekend at the plate, leading off the fourth with a solo home run. The next batter, Landrum knocked a standup triple to the wall in right center then tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left off the bat of Chambley, 7-0 Bulldogs.

A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles from Fields and pinch hitter Jayda Kearney loaded the bases with no out in the fifth. Pinch hitter Mackenzie Puckett provided a single to center field to easily score Payden Bordeau and secure the 8-0 run rule victory over the Boilermakers.

Georgia is back in action Wednesday when the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb at Jack Turner Stadium. First pitch against the Runnin’ Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m., EST. Kids 12 and under will have the opportunity to run the bases following the game.
