Softball: Georgia Shuts Out Gardner-Webb 6-0
The 15th-ranked Georgia softball team shut out Gardner-Webb Wednesday evening 6-0 behind a one-hitter from sophomore right-hander Britton Rogers at Jack Turner Stadium.
Rogers (4-0) went the distance in the circle, working seven complete. She struck out a career-best 11 hitters with no walks and took a perfect game bid into the seventh, losing it on a one-out single to center.
The offense scored six runs on nine hits. Sydney Chambley and Jaiden Fields each picked up two hits while Sara Mosley and Jayda Kearney drove in two runs each in the midweek contest.
Georgia (10-2) jumped on the board in the second inning with a five spot. The inning started with a triple off the bat of senior Lacey Fincher. She tagged up and scored on a line drive sac fly from Kearney to put Georgia ahead 1-0. With Ellie Armistead on second, CJ Landrum bunted her way aboard. On the play, a wild throw allowed Armistead to score. Landrum raced home on a triple off the wall in right from Savana Sikes, making it a three-run lead. After a walk to Chambley, Mosley drove in both runners with a double into the right center gap, bringing the tally to 5-0 after two.
Fields led off the third with a double to left. She took third on a throwing error from the left fielder on the play then tagged up and touched home on Kearney’s second sac fly of the game, 6-0.
Rogers kept the Runnin’ Bulldogs (5-5) at bay the remainder of the game, never letting a Gardner-Webb runner past first base.
Georgia Classic Softball Tournament Schedule Revised
The schedule for this weekend’s Georgia Classic softball tournament set to be hosted at Jack Turner Stadium has been revised.
Georgia will now host North Carolina and Bryant in a six-game tournament set to be played Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will play North Carolina at 3:30 p.m. on Friday then Bryant in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
Due to COVID-19 concerns within the Georgia Southern program, the Eagles will not participate in this weekend’s tournament. Georgia has rescheduled Georgia Southern for a midweek matchup Wednesday, March 30 at 6 p.m. in Athens.

T&F: UGA Cancels Spec Townes Invitational
The annual Spec Towns Invitational scheduled for April 7-9 has been canceled because of ongoing construction in the area and other logistical issues, according to an announcement from head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert.
The Spec Towns Track located off Lumpkin Street is adjacent to the new football facility being built. Phase two of the football facility is expected to be completed later this spring.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play host to the annual Torrin Lawrence Memorial at the Spec Towns Track on April 29-30, which is the last regular season outdoor meet before the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships.
