Baseball: Dawgs sweep Northern Kentucky
Freshman Tre Phelps was hit by a pitch three times Sunday, the final one providing a 12-11 walk-off to complete a sweep of Northern Kentucky Sunday at Foley Field.
Georgia (7-0) won a slugfest as the teams combined for 33 hits including the Bulldogs blasting four home runs (three in a row) as part of a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning. Phelps was one of the Bulldogs to go deep in that frame for his first career hit. The Norse (2-5) tied the game in the top of the ninth only to see the Bulldogs respond with a walk-off for the second straight day. On Saturday, Georgia won 7-6 after a four-run ninth.
“You’re hoping to get in there and see how your team responds,” said Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson on the close games. “You check the heartbeat a little bit. Our guys are learning how to slow the game down. When we do that and play the game one pitch at a time and understand they need to get 27 outs on us; we’re going to be just fine.”
In the second, the Norse grabbed a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run home run by Mitch Wood. The Bulldogs answered with a two-run double by senior Sebastian Murillo. NKU went back on top 4-2 in the third on a two-out, two-run home run by Liam McFadden-Ackman, his third of the year. NKU made it 5-2 in the fifth with a two-out, RBI-single from Jake Paulick. Georgia roared back with a seven-run outburst to claim a 9-5 advantage in the bottom of the inning.
Murillo ignited the rally with a leadoff double followed by a two-run home run by Dillon Carter. Slate Alford had a double and Charlie Condon (4-for-5) brought him on home on a double and advanced to third on an error. The home run barrage began with a blast by Logan Jordan to make it 7-5. Phelps collected his first hit when he homered to left and Kolby Branch made it three in a row with another shot to left for a 9-5 advantage. It marked the first time Georgia has hit back-to-back-to-back home runs since doing it in a 14-2 road win over top-ranked Vanderbilt in 2021.
The teams had an eventful sixth innings with the Norse pushing across three runs and Georgia answering with a pair to make it 11-8. NKU added two in the eighth and tied it in the ninth when Logen Devenport tripled and scored on a base hit by Mitch Wood (3-for-5, 3 RBI).
In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Condon collected his fourth hit of the day. Paul Toetz reached on a walk and then Fernando Gonzalez was intentionally walked after getting ahead in the count 2-0 to load the bases for Phelps. On a 3-2 offering, Phelps was hit by an Aaron Massie pitch to end the game. It marked the first walk-off hit by pitch by the Bulldogs since 2011 when Zach Cone got plunked against Arkansas in a 6-5 contest.
“I wish I could tell you that it didn’t hurt, but it definitely hurt,” said Phelps. “It takes courage. We go over it every day in practice. To be able to come in today and actually do it, especially to win a game is big.”
Graduate Brian Zeldin (1-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs pitching a scoreless inning while Massie dropped to 0-2. Senior Tyler McLoughlin helped get the Bulldogs out of a jam in the sixth when he entered the game with two on and two outs and Georgia clinging to a one-run lead. He struck out Brennan Rowe on three pitches. He provided 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Georgia returns to Foley Field Tuesday against Presbyterian with first pitch set for 3:02 p.m. The game will be available on SECN+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

WBB: Georgia gets a Senior Day win over Florida
A 26-point scoring effort from fifth-year senior Javyn Nicholson and a season-high 57 Georgia rebounds helped the Lady Bulldogs earn a Senior Day victory over the Florida Gators, 76-60, on Sunday afternoon.
Nicholson paced the Lady Bulldogs (12-15, 3-11 SEC) with her third-straight scoring effort of 20 or more points, also chipping in a team-high 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Jordan Cole collected the first double-double of her career, tallying a career-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. Georgia’s 57-rebound effort marked the team’s highest total since they grabbed 59 against Mercer on Nov. 18, 2021.
After alternating baskets with the Gators for the first four minutes of the contest, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-7 lead and force a Florida timeout with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter. Nicholson’s eight first quarter points coupled with six Florida turnovers forced by the Georgia defense helped the Lady Bulldogs finish the opening frame with an eight-point lead, 21-13.
Georgia sunk 10-of-17 shots in the second quarter for a 58.8% shooting mark to extend its lead to 47-25 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 22-point lead into the break. Cole led Georgia with 10 points in the frame as the Lady Bulldogs tied their third-most points scored in a half this season (47).
Nicholson sunk a pair of free throws at the 6:48 mark in the third quarter to give the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of the game, 53-29. Georgia and Florida exchanged buckets for most of the quarter before the Gators scored seven-straight points to trim Georgia’s lead to 57-41 with 2:17 left in the frame. Nicholson responded with five points of her own followed by a Savannah Henderson three-pointer to push Georgia’s lead back to 23 points, 65-42, as the Lady Bulldogs ended the quarter on an 8-1 run.
Florida chipped into Georgia’s lead in the fourth quarter, using a 7-0 run to come within 16 points of the Lady Bulldogs with 4:11 to play. Georgia used a late run to push its lead back out to 21 with 1:46 to go before the Gators scored the game’s final five points. Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures help Georgia celebrate Senior Day with a 76-60 win.

SB: Georgia moves to 12-1 with Dartmouth win
The third-ranked Georgia softball team defeated the Dartmouth Big Green Sunday afternoon, 8-1, at Jack Turner Stadium to close play at the Georgia Classic.
The Bulldogs improve to 12-1 in 2024.
Fifth-year Sara Mosley went 3-for-3 hitting two home runs and driving in five of Georgia’s eight runs. Emily Digby and Jayda Kearney each added two hits at the top of the order. In all 19 student-athletes saw playing time in Sunday’s game with eight hitters recording at least one hit.
Riley Orcutt worked one inning in her start then was relieved by Rachel Gibson who also pitched an inning out of the pen. Each struck out one batter and allowed one hit. Madison Kerpics (4-0) pitched two scoreless, hitless frames and was awarded the win in relief. Destin Howard pitched the final three innings en route to a three-inning save, allowing one run on three hits.
Mosley blasted a three-run home run down the left field line to put Georgia on the board in the home half of the first, 3-0.
Following an RBI double to left off the bat of Sydney Kuma to plate Kearney, Mosley stepped in and hit her second home run of the day to widen the lead to 6-0 after two innings.
An RBI groundout in the top of the sixth put the Big Green (0-4) on the board, 6-1.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more in the home half of the sixth on an RBI double from Jaydyn Goodwin and RBI base hit to right off the bat of Jaiden Fields, 8-1.
Howard stranded two Dartmouth runners on base in the sixth to close out the Bulldog victory.
Georgia hosts No. 9 Clemson in the first midweek game of the season on Wednesday at Jack Turner Stadium. First pitch against the Tigers is set for 5 p.m. Admission is free.

“It was great opportunity for us. Rachel [Gibson] going out there and controlling the first part of the game. I thought we had some good at-bats and put together some things. Excited to see Sara [Mosley] getting back to doing some of the things we all know Sara can do. And it was just a great opportunity because we got a lot of people into the game. We have to keep building our roster because it is a long season, and all those people, everybody on this team, is going to be counted on at some point. It was exciting to get them out there to get some opportunities. All in all, a really productive weekend.”

MGolf: Connor Creasy paces UGA at Southern Highlands Collegiate
The Georgia men’s golf team ended day one of the Southern Highlands Collegiate with a nine-over-par, 297 total at the Southern Highlands Golf Club on Sunday afternoon.
Connor Creasy paced the Bulldogs, shooting in the 60s for the fourth straight round. The graduate student carded a three-under, 69 opening round for the Bulldogs. Creasy is tied for seventh place in individual standings.
Georgia ended the day in 15th place, trailing TCU by five shots. Florida holds the team lead at 10-under, 278, with Illinois trailing by two shots. San Diego State, Texas A&M and Pepperdine all stand tied for third at six-under, 282. The individual champion earns an exemption into the Shriner’s Open at TPC Summerlin in October. Creasy stands three shots back from the lead.
Beck Burnette posted the second-best round on the team with a three-over 75. Ben van Wyk and Buck Brumlow rounded out the Bulldogs’ first round scoring with four-under and five-under-par rounds, respectively. Van Wyk, a graduate student, scored par-or-better on 15 holes, while Brumlow, a junior, began his afternoon two-under par through three.
The Bulldogs will continue with round two of the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Monday, Feb. 26 at noon ET.
