MTennis: Georgia fell to No. 3 Wake Forest, 5-2, on Monday afternoon

The No. 40 Georgia men’s tennis team fell to No. 3 Wake Forest, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. 

“A tough outing in the sense that our guys are showing a lot of fight and played a lot of good

tennis out there,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “We have to give the credit to Wake Forest. We played a great doubles point, they just showed a little bit more experience when it mattered most in singles and were able to win some close matches.”

Georgia secured the doubles point to start the match. No. 37 Ryan Colby and Niels Ratiu picked up where they left off, winning on court two and for their first victory of the dual match season together. The pair secured their first win since Jan. 6 against South Carolina with a 6-4 victory against Filippo Moroni and Matthew Thomson. On court three, Cyrus Mahjoob and Miguel Perez Peña, finished off doubles and clinched with a 6-3 win for the Bulldogs’ fourth doubles point of the year.

In singles, Colby earned his fourth-straight ranked win and seventh of the year. The junior defeated No. 53 Dhakshineswar Suresh, 7-5, 7-6(5), on court two.

“We’re a very motivated team, every day we put in the work, we do extra,” said Colby. “I think we’re one of the hardest working teams in the country, just little things here and there. We’re a young team – I know it’s not an excuse for Coach Diaz, but we’re learning.” 

The Demon Deacons quickly took the lead after winning matches on courts six and one. Ratiu was in the midst of a third set battle against No. 117 Luciano Tacchi on court four after the Bulldogs fell behind in the match, 2-1. The freshman earned a break in the set to tie it at 4-4, but was unable to pick up the win, falling 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Wake Forest then clinched the match on court five followed by No. 56 Colby, who notched his 10th straight-set win since September with his victory against No. 53 Suresh.

Georgia will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. on Friday, March 1 to compete against No. 4 Tennessee at the Goodfriend Tennis Center, with first serve set for 4:30 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs are 12-5 against the Volunteers since 2012.

The Starting Five

• Georgia ventures to LSU on Tuesday evening looking to notch a second-consecutive mid-week SEC road victory.

• With last Wednesday’s 76-64 win at Vanderbilt, Georgia improved to 25-1 when holding its opponents to less than 70 points during Mike White’s two seasons with the Bulldogs.

• Georgia is 4-4 on the road this season. The Bulldogs won four of their previous 37 road outings…a 4-33 record dating back to the 2019-20 season. Georgia’s four road wins this season matches the Bulldogs’ most since going 4-9 away from Athens during the 2017-18 campaign.

• Silas Demary Jr. is the only freshman in the SEC start every game this season. The Raleigh, N.C., native averaged 8.5 ppg in non-conference play but has uppped that to 11.1 ppg in SEC action.

• Georgia entered this week No. 22 nationally in bench points, with UGA’s reserves contributing 28.6 ppg. The Bulldogs’ bench has outscored its opponents in 21 of 27 games and supplied a season-long scoring margin of +276, a double-digit advantage of +10.2 ppg.

The Opening Tip

Georgia travels to Baton Rouge for a Tuesday night matchup with LSU at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Bulldogs are 15-12 overall and 5-9 in the SEC following last Saturday’s setback to No. 14 Auburn at a sold-out Stegeman Coliseum.

Last Wednesday, Georgia snapped a pair of losing skids – six games overall and four road contests – with a 76-64 victory at Vanderbilt.

The 2023-24 campaign has been a streaky one for Georgia, which also recorded winning streaks of 10 games overall, 10 contests at Stegeman Coliseum and three road outings earlier this season.

After averaging 20.3 ppg during the Bulldogs’ last three outings, Noah Thomasson has moved atop Georgia’s scoring leaders at 12.9 ppg. Jabri Abdur-Rahim also is scoring at a double-figure pace for the Bulldogs at 12.5. ppg. RJ Melendez and Silas Demary Jr. are just shy of scoring in double digits, with both Bulldogs contributing 9.9 ppg.

Georgia has been more productive and balanced offensively in conference action. 

The Bulldogs are one of three teams with a higher scoring offense in SEC play over non-league games. Four Bulldogs are averaging double figures in conference games, with Thomasson sporting a team-leading 13.4 ppg. Five Bulldogs have upped their scoring averages from their non-conference contributions, topped by Russel Tchewa’s jump of 3.3 ppg (from 6.1 to 9.4).

Baseball: Georgia continues a stretch of 15 games in 20 days with Presbyterian, Michigan State, and Georgia Tech

First pitch Tuesday at Foley Field is slated for 3:02 p.m. ET. Wednesday’s game is a 6:02 p.m. start while Saturday’s action begins at 2:02 p.m. All three games will be available on SEC Network+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. Georgia will have five games this week, three in Athens, one in Atlanta and one in Lawrenceville at Coolray Field.

The Bulldogs are off to a 7-0 start in the Wes Johnson era. Presbyterian is 5-3 while Michigan State is 2-5 and Tech is 6-1.

On Friday, the Bulldogs travel to Tech for a 6 p.m. start on ACC Network Extra. The series concludes Sunday at Coolray Field with the 21^st annual Spring Baseball Classic to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). Series History: Georgia holds a 20-4 mark against the Blue Hose dating to 1943, and the Bulldogs have won 20 in a row in the series. Georgia beat PC 11-6 last year in Athens.

The Bulldogs are 2-2 against the Spartans as they last visited Athens in 1958. That year, the teams split a two-game set.

Georgia and Tech have battled since 1898 with the Bulldogs owning a 218-169-2 advantage in the series. Georgia claimed both meetings on campus last season (7-2 in Athens, 16-6 in Atlanta) while Tech won the neutral site contest at Coolray Field 4-1 to avoid getting swept.

Windshields Beware: Georgia has blasted an NCAA-leading 22 home runs as part of its 7-0 start. Nine Bulldogs have at least one home run with graduate transfer Dillon Carter leading the team with four while four Bulldogs have three apiece. Also, the Bulldogs lead the nation with a .736 slugging percentage (Austin Peay ranks second at .680) and are fifth nationally with a .500 on base percentage. The Bulldogs are averaging 12.4 runs a game (seventh nationally) with a .355 team batting average (12^th nationally).

Condon Honored As SEC Player Of The Week: Redshirt sophomore Charlie Condon, a consensus preseason All-American, has been named the SEC Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. He ranks second nationally with an SEC-best .643 batting average (18-for-28). His 1.179 slugging percentage leads the SEC and is 10^th nationally. This past week in four games, Condon tallied an SEC-best 23 total bases on 11 hits for a .647 average.  His hits included a triple, three home runs along with nine runs scored and six RBI. He posted perfect fielding in 10 total chances, making three starts at third base plus one start in left field.

Good As Goldstein: Graduate left-hander Charlie Goldstein (2-0, 2.00 ERA) has been the ace of the pitching staff. In nine innings this season, he has 14 strikeouts and four walks, limiting opponents to a .133 average. During the first part of the season, the Bulldogs have taken a staff approach on the mound with Goldstein going a team-best five innings this past Friday in a 15-5 win over Northern Kentucky. On Tuesday, Georgia will start sophomore left-hander Jarvis Evans (1-0, 0.00 ERA).

Charlie Condon named SEC Baseball Player of the Week

University of Georgia redshirt sophomore Charlie Condon has been named the Southeastern Conference Baseball Player of the Week; the league announced Monday.

Condon tallied an SEC best 23 total bases on 11 hits including three home runs in leading Georgia to a 4-0 record last week. A 6-6, 216-pound native of Marietta. Ga., he batted .647 (11-for-17) during this stretch and extended his hitting streak to seven games. He provided perfect fielding in 10 total chances, making three starts at third base and one in left field.

Condon ranks second nationally with an SEC-leading .643 batting average while his 1.179 slugging percentage is tops in the conference and 10^th nationally. A consensus preseason All-American, Condon has had multiple hits in every game this season.

He is the second Bulldog to earn SEC Player of the Week honors this season, joining last week’s recipient, junior infielder Slate Alford.
