MGOLF: Phillips Paces Bulldogs After Round One in Las Vegas
With senior Trent Phillips leading the way, the ninth-ranked University of Georgia men’s golf team shot an 8-under 280 in the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
Playing at Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards), the Bulldogs 8-under is tied for fifth and 12 shots back of leader Oklahoma (20-under).
Phillips carded an opening-round 5-under 67, sits in a tie forth. The three-time medalist is two strokes behind tournament leader Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech. The senior from Inman, S.C., rolled in seven birdies on the day, including four-consecutive birdies in the middle of his round.
Juniors Nicolas Cassidy and Ben van Wyk and freshman Buck Brumlow each posted rounds of 1-under 71 for the Bulldogs – tied for 35th. The trio combined for 14 birdies on the day, including van Wyk’s team-best 3-under on par 4’s.
Freshman Maxwell Ford rounded out Georgia’s day at even-par 72.
The Southern Highlands Collegiate will continue on Monday, Feb. 28, and conclude on Tuesday, Mar. 1. Round two will tee off between 9:50 and 10:30 a.m. PT. The Bulldogs will be paired with Georgia Tech and TCU. GolfStat will provide live scoring, pairings, and tee times.
