MBB: UGA signee selected by USA Basketball for the USA roster competing in the upcoming 2024 Nike Hoop Summit

Future Georgia Bulldog Asa Newell is one of 12 players selected by USA Basketball for the USA roster competing in the upcoming 2024 Nike Hoop Summit. The 25th Nike Hoop Summit is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, at Moda Center in Portland, Ore.

The Nike Hoop Summit, scheduled for Saturday, April 13, at Moda Center in Portland, Ore., showcases the top American high school seniors facing off against a World team of top international players 19 and younger. The event has featured such NBA stars as Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Nicola Jokic and Dirk Nowitzki. Held annually since 1995, except for 2001-03 and 2020-21, the USA has a 17-7 series advantage over the World.

The 2024 Nike Hoop Summit will air live on FS1 with the women’s game tipping at 7:30 p.m. ET and followed by the men’s game at approximately 10:00 p.m. ET.

Newell, a 6-10 215-pound forward who signed with Georgia last November, will be representing the U.S. in International competition for the third time. He also was a member of the USA National Teams for the 2022 U17 and 2023 U19 FIBA World Cups.

Newell is the second-highest ESPN and third-highest 247Sports.com ranked recruit to sign with Georgia during the internet era. He trails only Anthony Edwards (No. 4 in 2019) on the ESPN.com ledger and only Edwards (No. 2) and Lou Williams (No.6 in 2005) in the 247Sports.com composite. Edwards went on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and is a rising superstar with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Williams elected to turn pro and has enjoyed a 17-year NBA career that includes three NBA Sixth Man of the Year awards.

MGolf hires former UGA letterman as assistant

Former Georgia men’s golf letterman Mookie DeMoss has joined the program’s staff as an assistant coach, head coach Chris Haack announced Thursday afternoon.

DeMoss, a Duluth native, captained the 2015 squad that went to the Final Four at the NCAA Championships. He was also an All-American Honorable Mention in 2015 and finished 11th individually in NCAA Stroke Play that year.

“I’m extremely grateful and honored to be back at Georgia,” DeMoss said. “In my opinion, the Georgia golf program is the best in the country – the tradition here is second to none. I was very humbled when Coach Haack approached me about this assistant coaching position. I learned so much from playing here and from former players pouring into me and this program. My wife and I both graduated from UGA and spent the first few years of our marriage here, is getting to be back in Athens is incredible. I’m so excited to get to work and for the opportunity to be part of Georgia again.”

During his time as a Bulldog, DeMoss helped lead the team to 10 tournament wins, including three team victories in 2015. His best finish that season was a third-place result and earned a low round of 68.

After graduating from Georgia in 2015, DeMoss competed in PGA TOUR Canada. He then played at the Barbasol Championships, a PGA TOUR event, in July of 2017, and the PGA Tour Latinoamérica in 2018 before becoming a Korn Ferry Tour member in 2019. In 2020, DeMoss won the Kannapolis Open on the GPro Tour, shooting 67-61-62 and carding a 23-under 190. He returned to PGA Tour Latinoamérica in 2020 and 2021.

Between Feb. 2020 and Sept. 2023, DeMoss earned seven top-15 finishes across 22 events. During his professional career, DeMoss Monday qualified for multiple events on the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA TOUR, including the Barbasol and Club Car Championship at The Landings Club in April 2022. He also caddied on the PGA TOUR for former Bulldogs Sepp Straka, Chris Kirk, Brendon Todd, Keith Mitchell and TOUR Player Josh Teater.

“This team is a really tight-knit group of guys,” DeMoss said. “They love to compete, and I think they haven’t come close to reaching their potential yet. My goal is to help maximize potential and help these guys to fall in love with the process of being the best they are capable of becoming.”

DeMoss and his wife, Betsy, are both Bulldog graduates and stayed in the Athens area for the first few years of their marriage. The two recently welcomed a daughter, Jane, on October 4th, 2023.
