2022 Record Book Performances
The latest national championship Georgia squad established memorable performances that will be included in the NCAA, College Football Playoff (CFP) and Bulldog record books from their historic 15-0 campaign.
A few highlights worth noting include:
*The Bulldogs were the only team to finish the 2022 season nationally ranked in the top five for Scoring Offense (41.1 points per game) and Scoring Defense (14.3 ppg).
*Georgia held seven teams this season to a season-low in points in a game including No. 3 TCU in the CFP National Championship as the Bulldogs completed their undefeated run with a 65-7 triumph.
*For the second consecutive year, Georgia led the nation in Point Differential. In 2022, it was +402 as the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 616-214. For the 2021 national champions, it was +426 (579-153).
*During its run as back-to-back national champions, Georgia has beaten every program that either won or played for a national championship during the CFP era.
*Kirby Smart is the only active head coach to lead his alma mater to multiple national titles and just the fifth since 1936 when the Associated Press poll era began.
*Smart is one of only 10 head coaches to win back-to-back national titles during this era including one of just two active coaches to do it (Nick Saban, Alabama 2011-12).
*Senior quarterback Stetson Bennett became the first player to be named the offensive Most Valuable Player in four CFP games including twice in a CFP National Championship Game.

WTENNIS: Dawgs Down Auburn at Duel in the Desert
The University of Georgia women’s tennis team picked up eight wins – six singles and two doubles – over the Auburn Tigers on day one of the Duel in the Desert.
“We had a very good start to the spring season today,” said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. “We’ve been eager to compete and today we had several courts where we had that special edge when it mattered the most. Auburn has a tough team this year and is well-coached, so today was definitely a strong statement about what we are capable of this year. We look forward to more challenges over the next few days here in Indian Wells.
In singles, Georgia picked up six wins on the day. Senior Ania Hertel, sophomores Dasha Vidmanova and Guillermina Grant and freshman Anastasiia Lopata won in straight sets, while graduate Meg Kowalski and sophomore Mell Reasco went the distance. After dropping the opening set, No. 100 Kowalski came back to defeat Angella Okutoyi 5-7, 6-0, 7-5. Reasco picked up her first ranked win of the spring, topping No. 43 Ariana Arseneault 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Hertel cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Adeline Flach, while No. 31 Vidmanova defeated No. 71 Carolyn Ansari 7-5, 6-3. No. 64 Lopata dominated Anastasia Astakhova 6-2, 6-3, while Grant closed the day out with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ali Despain.
In doubles action, the Bulldogs picked up two wins. Sophomores Mai Nirundorn and Grant defeated Ali Despain and Carolyn Ansari 6-3, while Kowalski and Reasco topped DJ Bennett and Kaitlyn Carnicella 7-5.
The Bulldogs will continue play at the Duel in the Desert with matches against student-athletes from Kansas on Saturday, January 14.

The Starting Five
• UGA is off to its first 2-1 start in SEC play since 2017-18 and looking to go 3-1 for first time since 2016-17.
• Terry Roberts is the SEC’s leading scorer in conference action, averaging 22.3 ppg in a trio of league dates.
• Against Miss. State, Braelen Bridges notched his 1000th point and 500th rebound in the 100th game of his D-I career.
• With 12 wins and 2 league victories, UGA has doubled both its overall and SEC win totals for the 2021-22 season..
• UGA assist-to-TO ratio is up by +.22 since Thanksgiving, the best improvement by an SEC team during that span.
The Opening Tip
Georgia looks to continue to build recent momentum when the Bulldogs travel to face Ole Miss on Saturday after.
Georgia is 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, with win totals already double those from the entire 2021-22 season. The Bulldogs have won five of their last six outings since returning to action following Final Exams.
Saturday’s game will serve as a Homecoming for first-year head coach Mike White, who was part of many of Ole Miss’ most successful teams ever. White was a four-year starter, including the Rebels’ first span of three-straight 20-win seasons and NCAA bids from 1997-99. From 2004-11, he was an assistant coach for teams that won two SEC West titles and reached four NITs.

Series History Ole Miss
Georgia is 76-46 all-time versus Ole Miss; however, the Rebels own a 28-26 advantage in games played in Oxford.
Last season on Feb. 19, Braelen Bridges’ 17-point performance led Georgia in an 85-68 setback to Ole Miss at Stegeman Coliseum.
Kario Oquendo added 14 points and Jabri Abdur-Rahim scored 11. Former Bulldog Tye Fagan paced the Rebels with game-high tallies of 20 points, five assists, four steals and 38 minutes.
The Rebels led by 42-38 after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer entering the intermission and gradually expanded that distance throughout the second stanza.
In the Bulldogs’ last trip to Oxford on Jan. 16, 2021, Georgia led 29-28 at halftime and remained on top for all but 14 seconds of the second stanza en route to a 78-74 win. Back-to-back 3-pointers from K.D. Johnson in a 33-second span doubled the Bulldogs’ advantage from six points to 71-59 with 4:33 remaining.
The Rebels rallied to pull within 73-72 with 1:27 left before a pair of Sahvir Wheeler free throws started a 5-2 surge to end the contest.
MTENNIS: Seventh-Ranked Georgia Begins 2023 Campaign at Florida State
The seventh-ranked University of Georgia men’s tennis team will begin its 2023 dual match season this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET as they travel to Tallahassee to take on the No. T-16 Florida State Seminoles at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
QUICK HITS
Returners and Newcomers
The Bulldogs return seven players off last year’s roster, including last year’s regular choices in singles for court two (Philp Henning), court four (Trent Bryde) and court five (Blake Croyder). Rounding out the returnees are Ethan Quinn, who redshirted last season, sophomores Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Peña and senior Britton Johnston.
Graduate student Teodor Giusca will make his debut for the Red and Black on Sunday as well. Giusca, a Bucharest, Romania native, transferred from Clemson after a successful four years with the Tigers. He frequently played the top court in both singles and doubles, peaking at No. 22 in doubles with partner Ryuhei Azuma, finishing with a 27-8 record in singles and 19 wins in doubles on the year.
“The tradition of Georgia men’s tennis stood out to me when I was looking at schools,” said Giusca. “How respected Coach Diaz is across the country and how many championships he’s won meant a lot to me. On top of that, with how many players he’s coached that have made it big on tour, it made me think this is the place I’ll grow the most as both a tennis player and a person.”
Redshirt freshman Filipe Costa also joins the Bulldogs’ roster. The São Paulo, Brazil native came to Athens after starting his collegiate career at Arizona State. Costa attended high school at Milton High School and grew up in Roswell. He enters the dual match season with a 2-2 record during the fall this year.
“Being at Georgia is a dream come true,” said Costa. “I wake up and look forward to each practice with all the guys every day. Coach Diaz and Coach Hunt have been such a fantastic and positive influence on me in just the first few months, and I can’t wait to see what the next few years have in store.”
