WBB: UGA falls to Tennessee, 95 – 73

 The University of Georgia women’s basketball team fell to Tennessee, 95-73, in Stegeman Coliseum before 2,596 spectators Thursday night.

Tennessee (13-7, 6-2 SEC) used three triples to build a 15-7 lead early. Georgia (10-11, 1-7 SEC) spread its scoring around the court but were unable to claim the lead as they trailed 19-14 after the first quarter.

The Lady Vols opened the second period with an 11-0 run to put them ahead 32-14. The Lady Bulldogs responded with six points of their own, but Tennessee used four points to close the half leading, 41-24.

Georgia took to shooting behind the perimeter, sinking four triples. A back-and-forth effort from both sides allowed the Lady Vols to continue to build upon their lead, taking a 66-54 advantage into the final frame.

Tennessee used short scoring runs throughout the fourth quarter to finish ahead 95-73.

Baseball tickets on sale and TV coverage announced

Fans can now purchase single game tickets for the upcoming 2024 Georgia baseball season. Also, the 2024 television coverage has been finalized after the Southeastern Conference announced the schedule Thursday.

Georgia will be featured at least eight times as part of the 2024 SEC Baseball television package. All 35 Georgia home games plus SEC road games will be available to view on television or streamed online exclusively as SEC Network+ events and available on ESPN.com and the ESPN app through participating providers. 

Opening Day for the 2024 season is Friday, Feb. 16. The SEC starts the year with eight teams ranked in the top 25 of preseason polls. A total of 94 SEC games will be televised plus six wildcard contests during the final week of the regular season (May 16-18) and the entire SEC Tournament (May 21-26).

All 56 regular season Bulldog games along with the postseason will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network from JMI/Learfield. All Georgia baseball games will be carried locally on WRFC 960 AM as it will serve as the primary home for all broadcasts. The Bulldogs open the season by playing host to UNC-Asheville in a three-game series at Foley Field. Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson is in his first season leading the Bulldogs.

Prices range from as low as $5 for general admission non-conference games (excluding Georgia Tech and Clemson), $10 for SEC games plus Georgia Tech and Clemson. Fans can save 20 percent with a “Flex Plan” when purchasing three games or more while group tickets are an option too.

WGolf: UGA opens play at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club today

The Georgia women’s golf team will begin the team portion of its 2024 calendar on Friday when the Bulldogs open play at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club.

Georgia hosted the Lady Bulldog Individual Championship last Saturday at the UGA Golf Course, when four Bulldogs posting top-10 finishes.

“Just like the individual piece, it’s exciting,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “It’s a chance to learn where we are as a team in January and not where we were when we ended the fall. As we know, this is the dash to May and San Diego for the national championships. We’ll know a lot more about ourselves in three or four days from now. That’s the most exciting piece of it. The journey is fun.”

Georgia, which has notched top-20 finishes at each of the last three NCAA Championships, enters the spring at No. 30 in the NCAA’s new Spikemark ranking system. No. 18 Cal is the highest-ranked team competing in Mexico. Tournament host Virginia also is in the top-25 at No. 23. The remaining competing schools are Colorado State, Florida State, Louisville, Maryland, N.C. State, New Mexico, SMU, Tennessee and UNLV.

This weekend’s tournament will feature 27 holes of play on both Friday and Saturday, a deviation from the traditional 36-18 format for most two-day events.

“It’s interesting,” said fifth-year senior Caterina Don. “Sometimes I feel like when it’s 36-18 it’s a long day. This weekend, with 27-27, is definitely different. I think it makes you take the approach of playing shot-by-shot, call it quits for that day and restart the next day.”

Don will occupy the top spot in Georgia’s lineup. The fifth-year senior from Pinerolo, Italy has enjoyed a stellar season, with four top-10 finishes in five tournaments. Don is a combined 15-under over 13 rounds to date.

Rounding out the Bulldogs’ playing five are juniors LoraLie Cowart and Kate Song and freshmen Savannah De Bock and Natachanok “Drive” Tunwannarux. In addition, graduate transfer Bernice Olivarez Ilas will compete as an individual.

“All of them have world-class resumes but to fit together as a team, is something we have to work on and see how they get along as a group,” Brewer said. “We’ll learn a lot about ourselves simply from the travel piece and how we mesh on the road away from the golf course.”

Tunnwannarux played in one fall event, shooting 4-under en route to tying for 20th at the Cougar Classic.

“I am super excited to start on playing again, and can’t wait to be busy,” Tunwannarux said. “I have been dying to play so I feel really ready to play.”

After competing individually last weekend, Don and Tunwannarux are eager to have a team leaderboard this weekend. However, their approaches are to focus on themselves on the course.

“I always go in with the mindset that you never know what anyone else is doing so you just have to do what you can, try to play the best that you can,” Don said. “At the end of the week, we’ll see where we stand. I’m really excited because it’s a new team. We have a couple of new players in the lineup so I’m excited to see where we start the season at and where we have to improve going forward to make sure we have a great experience come May.”

“The longer I play golf, my approach to golf change so much through time,” Tunwannarux said. “I just want to go play, have fun, enjoy the course and be there with the girls. I want to be there, supporting and rooting for each other, and go kick butt.”

Georgia will tee off nine-minute intervals between 10:30-11:06 am ET on Friday and be paired with SMU and New Mexico for the first round and a half. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at www.golfstat.com.

T&F: Three Georgia women slated to compete at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic – Today through Saturday

When Do The Bulldogs Start?: Leah Anderson will make her season debut in the long jump on Friday at 5:15 p.m. ET.  In addition on the first day, Ella Rush will compete in her third collegiate pentathlon during her second year at Georgia.  The progression of the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m will begin at 12:10 p.m.

On Saturday, Anderson and Mikeisha Welcome will take line up in the women’s triple jump at 1 p.m.

Dawg Trio:

*Anderson, a Dallas, Texas, native, competed for the first time last year as a true freshman in the 60-meter hurdles, 100m hurdles, long jump and triple jump.  She posted bests of 8.65 in the 60m hurdles, 13.96 in the 100m hurdles, 5.72 meters/18 feet, 9 ¼ inches in the indoor long jump, 5.47m/17-11.50 in the outdoor long jump, 12.64m/41-5.75 in the indoor triple jump and 12.37m/40-7 in the outdoor triple jump.

*Rush, a Repton, U.K., native, completed a pair of pentathlons in her inaugural season as a Lady Bulldog.  She was fifth at the 2023 SEC Indoor Championships (4,081 points) and was third at the Texas Tech Multis with the 10^th-best score in UGA history (4,100).  Outdoors, she had one heptathlon score of 5,422 points for ninth place at the Mt. SAC Relays before sustaining an injury that would sideline her for the remainder of the year.  She competed in a total of four outdoor meets in 2023.

*Welcome, a Toronto, Canada, native, is one of the most accomplished returners for the Georgia women and will be making her season debut in the triple jump.  Last year, Welcome was third at the SEC Indoor Championships before setting a St. Vincent national record to take fourth at the NCAA Championships with a mark of 14.21m/46-7.50, which ranks second in school history and made her the No. 9 all-time collegiate performer.  She was a scoring All-American at Oklahoma during the 2020-22 seasons before transferring.

Flashback:

Razorback Invitational (Jan. 26-27): Georgia had another pair of individual victories on Arkansas’ campus last weekend and seven improvements to the Bulldogs’ all-time top-10 lists, including three on the women’s 400m list.  All three of those 400m runners were also on the third-place 4x400m relay team that broke the school record with a 3:28.01.  This made the Lady Bulldog unit the No. 9 all-time collegiate performer with the No. 29 all-time collegiate performance.

What’s Next For The Bulldogs?

On Feb. 9-10, some Bulldogs will travel to the Tiger Paw Invite at Clemson while another group will go to Nashville for the Music City Challenge.  There will be a total of six regular season indoor meet weekends before the SEC Indoor Championships in Fayetteville on Feb. 23-24.  This year’s NCAA Championships will be in Boston for the first time in history on March 8-9.
