» Georgia is in its second season under the leadership of Coach ABE. ABE’s successful first year included a NCAA tournament appearance, 22 wins, and a fifth-place finish in the final SEC standings.
» The Lady Bulldogs were the only SEC squad to not have a single player enter the transfer portal this past offseason.
» Coach ABE’s teams have won 20 or more games in 11-straight seasons, while her 12 NCAA tournament appearances rank third among active SEC coaches, only behind Kim Mulkey (LSU) and Dawn Staley (South Carolina).
MBB: Dawgs in the Pros
At the turn of the new year, a number of Georgia basketball alumni are impressing in their roles for professional sides domestically and abroad. Three former Bulldogs are halfway through their NBA seasons with others rounding out strong campaigns for their respective squads.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and the Denver Nuggets have enjoyed an 11-4 run over the last 15 games. In that time, Caldwell-Pope has totaled 145 points (9.7 ppg), 42 rebounds (2.8 rpg) and 38 assists (2.5 apg). Starting all 39 games in which he has played this season, the guard has scored 396 points (10.2 ppg), with 85 rebounds (2.2 rpg), 99 assists (2.5 apg), 22 blocks (0.6 bpg) and 58 steals (1.5 spg). The reigning champions are 28-14 as the league reaches the midpoint of the season, good for second place in the Northwest Division and the third overall seed in the Western Conference.
For the Brooklyn Nets, Nic Claxton has continue to be a formidable presence in the paint for the 10th-placed Eastern Conference side. On top of his 12.1 points per game this season, Claxton has also collected 291 boards (10.0 rpg) this season, slotting him into 13th place in the league’s rebound leaders. In the last 13 games, the center has amassed 156 points (12.0 ppg), 141 rebounds (10.8 rpg) and 30 blocks (2.3 bpg). Claxton’s 23 points on January 5 in his squad’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder was a season high. Interestingly, Claxton and the Nets travelled to France to play in the NBA’s Paris Game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, in which the Ohio outfit outlasted Brooklyn 111-102.
Still on top in the Western Conference, Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves have enjoyed an extremely successful first half of the NBA season. Edwards 26.0 points per game – 13th best among league scorers this season – has helped the Minnesota side to a 28-11 overall record this season. In the Timberwolves’ December 28 contest against the Dallas Mavericks, Edwards posted a season high 44 points in a 118-110 win. On the season, Edwards has contributed 936 points, 194 rebounds (5.4 rpg) and 178 assists (5.0 apg).
Terry Roberts, in the NBA’s G League with the Long Island Nets, in six games played for the Brooklyn Nets affiliate, has averaged 5.5 points per game, 1.2 rebounds per game, 1.2 assists per game and 0.5 steals per game. His efforts have helped the side to a 4-4 record, which slots the side into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Twelve former Bulldogs have been underway in their respective seasons overseas. A review of each player’s season to date has been compiled below.
Aaron Cook is continuing to impress for his new side, Bremerhaven, in the German ProA League. In Cook’s last five outings, he has scored in double figures in four of the matchups, totalling 64 points (12.8 ppg), 17 rebounds (3.4 rpg) and 27 assists (5.4 apg). His five rebounds against Dresden on January 7 is a season high. Bremerhaven owns a 7-10 overall record, with a 3-2 record in the last five games, and are currently in 11th place in league standings.
In Qatar, Tyree Crump and Al Khor are 3-13 after 16 games played in the QBL season and sit at the bottom of league standings. Despite the shaky season from the Qatari outfit, Crump has paced the offensive output for his side with 24.2 points per game and 4.6 assists per game, while shooting 40.2 percent from the field. The guard notched a season high in points with 41 in the January 3 contest against Al Wakrah.
In the Polish OBL, Nemanja Djurisic has enjoyed a strong last five games for Stal. In the five-game stretch, Djurisic has scored in double figures in every matchup, including posting 15 points in three of the contests. On the season, the forward has tallied 162 points (11.6 ppg), 82 rebounds (5.9 rpg), 37 assists (2.6 apg) and 11 steals (0.8 spg). Stal owns a 10-7 record on the season, good for third place in the league, and sits in a pole position to compete for the league crown.
John Florveus is continuing to impress in the Bulgarian National Basketball League, but the Haitian American dual-international has been wearing new colors since Christmas. Florveus completed a move to Rilski, and in his first four games for the club he has contributed 40 points (10.0 ppg), 27 rebounds (6.8 rpg) and two blocked shots. In his second game for the outfit, Florveus posted 19 points – a season high. Rilski is currently third in league standings and boast an 11-5 record.
J.J. Frazier’s last month for Bornova in the Turkish Basketball League has been outstanding to say the least. In his last four games since December 15, Frazier has posted scoring outputs of 29, 26, 17 and 27, respectively, while also contributing 29 rebounds (7.3 rpg) and 36 assists (9.0 apg). The 29 points scored against Ankaragucu on Christmas Day is a season high for the guard. Bornova is currently 10th in league standings with a 9-10 record.
In the VTB United League, Rayshaun Hammonds and Avtodor are currently 9-13 and sit in 10th place in league standings. For the Russian club, Hammonds has posted 378 points (17.2 ppg), 153 boards (7.0 rpg), 26 assists (1.2 apg) and 19 steals (0.9 spg) on the season. He matched his season high in points against Nizhny Novgorod on January 6 with a 29-point performance.
Also still competing in an international league, Jordan Harris and Circus Brussels Basketball own an 8-8 record and occupy the fifth seed in Group B of the league standings. Harris, on the season, has scored 169 points (11.3 ppg), with 68 rebounds (4.5 rpg), 28 assists (1.9 apg) and 29 steals (1.9 spg). In his last four games, the guard has posted 33 points (8.3 ppg), 10 rebounds (2.5 rpg) and five assists (1.3 apg).
In Travis Leslie’s first game back in West Asia Super League action for Kazma, the swingman posted 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block in a defeat to Al-Manama on January 15. Through four games played this season, Leslie has combined for 94 points (23.5 ppg), 30 rebounds (7.5 rpg), eight assists (2.0 apg) and nine steals (2.5 spg). His Kuwait-based outfit is currently 12-2 and sits in second place in the Division 1 league standings.
Yante Maten and Terrance Woodbury are continuing to thrive in their roles for their respective teams in the Japanese leagues. Maten, competing with San-en NP, has scored 120 points (15.0 ppg), collected 71 rebounds (8.9 rpg) and 13 blocks (1.6 bpg) in his last eight games. On the season, the former SEC Player of the Year’s contributions of 393 points (13.6 ppg), 223 rebounds (7.7 rpg), 45 assists (1.6 apg) and 35 blocked shots (1.2 bpg) have helped to first place in the Central Division of the Japanese B1 League with a 25-4 record. In the Japanese B2 League, Woodbury and the Kumamoto Volters are in third place in the West Division of the Japanese B2 League on a 20-10 record. In his last six games, Woodbury has scored 140 points (23.3 ppg), with 22 rebounds (3.7 rpg) and 18 assists (3.0 apg). His 36 points on December 23 against the Shiga L-Stars matched his season-high on the season.
Another duo of former Bulldogs, Derek Ogbeide and Gerald Robinson, are still thriving in their roles in the Italian Serie-A. Ogbeide, with Pistoia, is averaging 10.9 points per game, 8.6 rebounds per game, 1.1 assists per game and 0.9 blocked shots per game. The center matched his season high in rebounds with 13 on January 7 against Cremona. His steady output has helped Pistoia to 10th place in the league standings on top of an 8-8 record. Robinson, with Scafati, has scored 23 points (7.7 ppg), with three rebounds and 13 assists (4.3 apg) in his last three outings for the club. In two of the last three outings, Robinson has been perfect from the free throw line which interestingly matches up with two dominant wins for the outfit. Robinson’s 146 points (9.7 ppg), 31 rebounds (2.1 rpg) and 21 steals (1.4 spg) on the season has helped the team to an 8-8 record, good for ninth place in the league standings.
