MLB Draft: Fernando Gonzalez Selected by San Francisco
University of Georgia catcher Fernando Gonzalez was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 20th round with the 598th overall pick Tuesday evening on the final day of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.
The Panama City, Panama, native appeared in 181 games with 162 starts in his Bulldog career. He batted .261 with 21 home runs, including three grand slams, 33 doubles, three triples and 106 RBI. The two-time SEC All-Defensive team catcher posted a .994 fielding percentage in 1,437 total chances.
Gonzalez posted a career-year in batting during his senior campaign, concluding the season batting .292 with 10 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 53 RBI. He smacked grand slams against Northern Colorado and Texas A&M and matched his career-high with an eight-game hitting streak.
The sport management major was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Gonzalez set a school record for catchers with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 330 total chances during his freshman season.
Gonzalez is the third Bulldog drafted under first-year Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson. He is the first Bulldog drafted by San Francisco since the Giants selected catcher Zack Bowers in the 24th round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
The Bulldogs have a string of 51 straight seasons with at least one player signing a professional contract. Also, Georgia has had at least one player drafted going back to 1987.
