T&F: Shaunae Miller-Uibo Wins 400m Gold At World Championships
Former Lady Bulldog champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo collected her first gold medal in the 400-meter dash at this meet on Friday’s eighth day of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Ore..
Complementing her two consecutive Olympic gold medals and pair of silvers at past Worlds competitions, Miller-Uibo ran a world-leading 49.11 out of lane three as the closest of the seven other finalists ran a 49.60.
On Wednesday, Miller-Uibo, who captured the 2013 NCAA indoor 400m title for Georgia, ran a season-best 49.55 to have the fastest qualifying time in the semifinal.
On June 15, current sprinter Elija Godwin, a native of Covington, Ga., ran the opening leg for Team USA’s mixed 4x400m relay as the foursome ran a 3:10.16 to earn a bronze medal. Godwin handed the baton to Allyson Felix, a 19-time World Championships medalist who officially retired following the race.
The meet began at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field last Friday and runs through Sunday. The Bulldog contingent represents Team USA, Antigua, Bahamas, Brazil, Estonia, Greece, Jamaica, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
The World Championships will be broadcast (NBC/CNBC) and streamed (NBC Sports/Peacock) simultaneously over the 10 days of action.
On Saturday, current Georgia All-Americans Kyle Garland (USA) and Johannes Erm (Estonia) will join Miller-Uibo’s husband and former Bulldog champion Maicel Uibo (Estonia) and current volunteer assistant Janek Oiglane (Estonia) in the decathlon starting at 12:50 p.m. ET.
In addition, former UGA All-American and current UGAAA employee Chanice Porter (Jamaica) will compete at least on Saturday in the long jump, and Godwin is expected to take the track in the qualifying round of the 4x400m relay on Saturday and the final on Sunday if Team USA advances.
ICYMI: 2022 SEC Media Days Poll
Alabama has been predicted to win the 2022 SEC Championship, according to a preseason poll of media covering SEC Football Media Days.
Alabama received an overwhelming 158 votes to be crowned SEC Champion on December 3 in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, while Georgia was second with 18 votes.
The Bulldogs were selected to win the SEC Eastern Division with 1254 points, including 172 first-place votes, while Kentucky was second with 932 points and four votes to win the division. Tennessee was third with 929 points. Points were awarded on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.
Alabama was picked to win the SEC Western Division with 1262 total points, followed by Texas A&M with 968 and Arkansas with 844. Alabama received 177, all but four, first-place votes in the SEC West.
Only nine times since 1992 has the predicted champion before the season at SEC Media Days proceeded to win the SEC Championship Game, including the last two consecutive seasons.
