Olympic Dawgs Report: Four Dawgs in action on day one
PARIS – Four Bulldogs were in action Saturday on the first full day of competition at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Swimming
- Bulldog alum Nic Fink qualified for Sunday’s men’s 100-meter breaststroke final with a fourth-place time of 59.16 in Saturday’s semifinals. Fink’s evening time improved upon a 10th-place mark of 59.66 in prelims. Fink will swim in the final at 3:54 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.
- Rising junior Steven Insixiengmay, representing Laos, placed 31st in the 100m breaststroke prelims with a time of 1:04.64, winning his heat by a half-second.
- Bulldog alum Javier Acevedo helped lead Canada to a sixth-place finish in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, closing out with a time of 3:12.18. Acevedo swam the anchor leg in a time of 47.81. Acevedo makes his individual debut in Paris in the 100m backstroke prelims Sunday at 5 a.m. on USA and Peacock.
- Bulldog alum Chase Kalisz looks to defend his gold medal from Tokyo in the 400m IM with prelims at 5 a.m., followed by the final at 2:45 p.m. on NBC/Peacock.
Tennis
- Former Bulldog Ellen Perez of Australia fell in the opening round of the women’s doubles bracket against the top-seeded American tandem of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, 6-3, 6-1.
- Representing Team Australia alongside doubles partner Daria Saville, Perez saw a bright start to the match after splitting the first two games before breaking Gauff and Pegula to lead 2-1 early. Despite battling for points in the ensuing games to level at 3-3, the Australian duo dropped the first set 6-3 heading into the second. In the second set, Perez and Saville worked four game points and saved an opposing break point to fight back to a 2-1 deficit. Ultimately, momentum swung opposite as they fell to No. 1 Gauff and Pegula 6-3, 6-1 in straight sets.
- Perez will remain in Paris for mixed doubles action while former Bulldog María Lourdes Carlé will wait to make her Olympic debut. Carlé was set to open her first match at the Olympics in doubles play on Saturday before the match was postponed due to weather. Carlé is also currently scheduled to face Germany’s Tatjana Maria in singles at 6 a.m. on Peacock.
Coming Up Sunday
- Former Bulldog Anthony Edwards and the United States men’s basketball team begin pool play against Serbia at 11:15 a.m. on NBC and Peacock.
- Former Bulldog Croix Bethune and the U.S. women’s soccer team continue pool play against Germany at 3 p.m. on USA and Peacock. Bethune was elevated from alternate to the 18-player roster for Thursday’s match against Zambia.
- Incoming transfer Csenge Bácskay competes on vault for Hungary in women’s gymnastics qualification at 3 p.m. on E! and Peacock.
