T&F: Tom Chorny has been hired as Georgia’s cross country coach and assistant distance coach
Prior to arriving in Athens, Chorny had served as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at Miami University (Ohio) since 2015. A three-time All-American for Indiana who graduated in 1999, Chorny was a volunteer assistant for the Hoosiers from 2007-13. His first job with Miami was as an assistant in 2013.
Chorny was the 2022 (men’s cross country), 2021 (men’s outdoor track) and 2018 (men’s cross country) Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year after guiding the RedHawks to 17 All-America honors in 10 different events. His distance corps set 27 school records at Miami in 23 different events.
“I am excited about the addition of Tom Chorny to our program,” said Smith Gilbert. “Coach Chorny comes to UGA from Miami University of Ohio and has a pattern of coaching elite national runners in all event areas. We believe Coach Chorny is one of the best coaches in the NCAA and are excited to have him in Athens.”
“Georgia has always been one of those schools I’ve looked at from afar and cheered for over their opponents,” Chorny said. “It wasn’t until this job opened that I realized how much excitement this possibility would bring. Through the interview process, everyone has been amazing and it’s hard to imagine a place I’d rather be. There’s so much potential for us to grow with our cross country teams, and I’m excited to get started.”
