Olympic Dawgs: A silver medal and debut
PARIS – A silver medal for Bulldog alum Nic Fink and the Olympic debut of Anthony Edwards highlighted Sunday’s action at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Swimming
- Fink earned his first career Olympic medal and the 39th in program history as he tied Great Britain’s Adam Peaty in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke final with a time of 59.05. Fink stood in fifth place at the 50m turn, but quickly made up the deficit before a furious finish, closing out just two-hundredths of a second behind victorious Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy.
- Bulldog alum Chase Kalisz finished 11th in the men’s 400m individual medley prelims, turning in a time of 4:13.36. Fellow alum Javier Acevedo placed 20th in the men’s 100m backstroke prelims with a time of 54.19.
- The Bulldogs return to the pool on Tuesday as rising senior Luca Urlando competes in the men’s 200m butterfly prelims at 5 a.m. on USA Network and Peacock.
Basketball
- Edwards helped lead the United States men’s basketball team to a 110-84 victory over Serbia in their pool play opener. Edwards scored 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting along with five rebounds in 19 minutes of play. The Minnesota Timberwolves star immediately made an impact with a block that led to a LeBron James fast break layup, followed by a dunk to close out the first quarter off a midcourt lob from James.
- Team USA returns to the court on Wednesday to face South Sudan at 3 p.m. on USA and Peacock.
Tennis
- Making her Olympic debut for Argentina in the women’s single bracket, former Bulldog María Lourdes Carlé opened her Olympic run with a statement victory after blanking Germany’s Maria Tatjana, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round at Roland-Garros Court 10.
- The Daireaux, Argentina native, who came into Paris ranked as the No. 89 singles player, dominated through two sets, always playing one step ahead of the WTA No. 59 Tatjana while securing 21 points on first serves and six break points in the match.
- Despite having to wait to make her women’s doubles debut in Paris, Carlé now moves on to the second round of the women’s singles bracket where she will face second-seeded American Coco Gauff on Monday in the second match of the day on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The first match will begin at 6 a.m. with live coverage on Peacock.
- Former Bulldog Ellen Perez of Australia will join her partner Matthew Ebden in the mixed doubles first round, taking on Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marcel Granollers of Spain Monday.
Gymnastics
- Rising junior Csenge Bácskay made her Olympic debut for Hungary in artistic gymnastics, competing on vault on Sunday afternoon. Bácskay scored a 13.900 for her first vault and a 13.633 for her second, totaling 13.766 points. She finished 12th overall, placing four spots shy of advancing to the event final.
- Bácskay is an incoming transfer joining the GymDogs for the 2025 season after spending the last two years at Nebraska.
Soccer
- Former Bulldog Croix Bethune was again elevated to the main 18-player roster for the United States women’s national team’s 4-1 victory over Germany but did not appear in the match.
- The USWNT will close out pool play against Australia on Wednesday at 1 p.m. on E! and Peacock, needing only a draw to win their group and advance to the knockout round.
