Olympic Dawgs: Luca Urlando and María Lourdes Carle both competed Tuesday
PARIS – Rising senior Luca Urlando and former Bulldog María Lourdes Carle both competed Tuesday at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Swimming
- Urlando finished 17th overall in the men’s 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:56.18, earning the first alternate position for the evening semifinals. The Sacramento native came out quick and held the lead in the second morning heat through 150 meters before slowing down to finish fifth in the heat.
- The Bulldogs will return to the pool on Friday as incoming transfer Ieva Maluka competes for Latvia in the women’s 200m individual medley at 5:17 a.m. on USA Network and Peacock.
Tennis
- Carlé’s run in Paris came to an end in the women’s doubles second round, falling to Spain’s No. 8 seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo and Cristina Bucsa at Roland-Garros Court 12 Tuesday.
- Playing alongside Nadia Podoroska, the Argentinian duo played a leveled match through four games before giving up a break to trail 4-2. Despite winning the following game, Carlé and Podoroska dropped the ensuing two games to lose the first set, 6-3. In the second set, both sides exchanged games back-and-forth to push a 4-4 score. Carlé and Podoroska suffered a late break in the ninth game to trail before ultimately falling in the set and match, 6-2, 6-4.
- Forrmer Bulldog Ellen Perez of Australia will continue her Olympic run Wednesday alongside partner Matthew Ebden, when they face Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen in the mixed doubles quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. on Peacock
Coming Up Wednesday
- The United States women’s soccer team concludes pool play against Australia at 1 p.m. on E! and Peacock, needing only a draw to win the group. Former Bulldog Croix Bethune has been elevated to the main roster in both pool matches but has not seen field action.
- Former Bulldog Anthony Edwards and the U.S. men’s basketball team continue pool play against South Sudan at 3 p.m. on USA and Peacock.
