MBB: Erik Pastrana is participating in the 2022 TopConnect Basketball Symposium
Georgia assistant coach Erik Pastrana is participating in the prestigious 2022 TopConnect Basketball Symposium taking place at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Monday.
Presented by Teamworks and INFLCR, TopConnect (formerly Villa 7) originated in 2003 by then VCU Athletic Director Dr. Richard Sander to identify the top assistant basketball coaches in the country and connect them with mid-major Athletic Directors, providing tremendous networking and leadership development opportunities for both parties. The three-word mantra of “Connect. Prepare. Lead.” identifies the purpose of TopConnect.
In its fifth year, TopConnect develops educational programming that allows these top assistant coaches to hear from a wide variety of successful leaders and speakers. The 2022 symposium is headlined by a panel of prominent and successful coaches including men’s head coaches John Aiken from McNeese State and Lon Kruger (retired) and women’s head coaches Lindy LaRocque from UNLV and Simon Harris from East Tennessee State.
Athletic Directors presenting include, Mark Benson, University of Albany; Mike Capaccio, The Citadel; Bryan Blair, University of Toledo; Chris King, Robert Morris; Scott Garrett, Cleveland State University, Alex Ricker-Gilbert, Jacksonville University; Eugene Marshall, Hampton University; Drew Marrachello, Boston University; and Gene Taylor, Kansas State University.
Also, joining the lineup of influential speakers are Debbie Spander, Insight Sports Advisors; Colton Houston, HD Intelligence; Glenn Sugiyama, DHR Global; Jeff Schemmel, College Sport Solutions; and Kevin Barefoot, Teamworks.
Panel discussions and breakout sessions include expectations of a head coach; preparing for the interview; first 365 days managing the season and developing real expectations; what ADs are looking for; scheduling; NIL; discipline and motivation; mental health; core values; building support; and the future of college basketball.
The popular “Speed Dating” interaction returns and allows for rapid networking to take place between the assistant coaches and administrators.
Since the inception of TopConnect in 2018, 35 assistant coach and assistant athletic director participants have been promoted to the next chair of Head Coach and Athletic Director as well as a Conference Commissioner.
WBB: Aliyah Gregory Named Director of Scouting and Video Analytics
Aliyah Gregory, a former first-team American Athletic Conference selection at UCF, has been tabbed Georgia’s Director of Scouting and Video Analytics.
“I am super pumped to have Aliyah rejoin our staff as the Director of Scouting and Video Analytics,” head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson said. “As a former player of mine, she had amazing leadership skills and an advanced basketball IQ. Aliyah was consistently one of the top players in the American Conference as a first-team All-Conference selection. Throughout her professional career, Aliyah had tremendous coaching success at the high school and AAU levels.
“One of her most significant accomplishments was the creation of her Domestic Awareness Foundation that brought awareness to women trapped in domestic relationships. Her foundation reached women throughout the state of Florida. I am excited that Aliyah will bring a multitude of influences to our Georgia Basketball family.”
Gregory played for Coach ‘ABE’ and had an illustrious career at UCF (2014-18). She finished ranked sixth all time in Knights’ history in points (1,437), fourth all time in made field goals (578) and seventh in free throws made (242). She was a first-team All-Conference player, becoming the first women’s basketball student-athlete in Knight history to earn that distinction.
The Tampa native earned a spot on the NCAA Team of the Week on Feb. 22, 2017 after scoring a career-best 34 points to lead UCF to the program’s first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent in South Florida. Her 15 made field goals are tied for the fourth-most in a single game at UCF. She entered the game needing 10 points to become the 22nd Knight to reach 1,000 career points and achieved the feat with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter.
In 2017 and 2018, Gregory helped lead UCF to back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time in program history.
