BSB: Georgia defeated Georgia Tech 3-1 Saturday
The Bulldogs (9-1) broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh when senior catcher Fernando Gonzalez smacked his third home run of the year to extend his hitting streak to seven games. In the eighth, Georgia added an insurance run on an RBI-double by freshman Tre Phelps. Junior Slate Alford scored after reaching on a leadoff double.
“It’s tough when you play guys like these because they’re a really good team,” said Gonzalez. “We did a good job today, but today is over and now the focus is on tomorrow. We will get our rest and then get ready to go.”
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Tech (7-2) tied the game on a solo home run by Parker Brosius. It was one of only four hits on the day as the Georgia bullpen blanked Tech over the final 6.2 innings.
Graduate Josh Roberge notched a win with a scoreless frame while graduate Brian Zeldin picked up his second save by recording the final four outs. Tate McKee dropped to 0-1, allowing the home run to Gonzalez. Georgia sophomore Kolten Smith provided 4.1 shutout innings in relief of starter Christian Mracna.
Also, the Bulldogs played stellar defense including a couple of highlight plays at third base by Charlie Condon which ended potential scoring threats.
“You look at our pitching staff today – I’m really proud of them,” said Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson. “I think the biggest thing that you could take away from today is our heartbeat is good. On a tight rivalry game, those are the kinds of games you’ve got to win and those are the environments you’re going to play in the SEC. We played good defense including Charlie (Condon) who helped us win that game with his glove.”
The series continues Sunday at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville as part of the 21st annual Spring Baseball Classic to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. First pitch will be at 3:02 p.m. and be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

SB: No. 5/3 Georgia softball fell to No. 20/24 Cal, 7-2
No. 5/3 Georgia softball fell to No. 20/24 Cal, 7-2, on day two of the DeMarini Invitational Saturday. Georgia’s second game of the day against No. 11/10 Stanford was rained out.
Georgia is now 15-2 on the season. The Dogs will play Stanford on Sunday at 3 p.m., ET, in an already scheduled game. Saturday’s game will not be made up.

Jaiden Fields highlighted the offense for the Dawgs, picking up two hits, including a two-run home run and a double.
Madison Kerpics (5-1) pitched two innings in her start, suffering her first loss. She allowed three runs on two hits. Shelby Walters worked three innings out of the pen. Rachel Gibson and Riley Orcutt combined to pitch the sixth inning, each picking up a strikeout.
Sara Mosley reached on a one-out single, then Fields stepped in and launched a two-run home run to centerfield, putting Georgia ahead 2-0 in the second.
Cal (17-2) used a lot of small ball to push across three runs in the bottom of the inning and go ahead 3-2.
The Bears added another run on a leadoff homer in the fourth, 4-2. Cal tacked on two more in the fifth on a double, widening the lead to 6-2, in the fifth. An RBI single brought the Cal lead to 7-2 in the sixth.

MBB: UGA fell to Texas A&M, 70-56 Saturday
The Georgia men’s basketball team fell to Texas A&M, 70-56, on Saturday evening’s senior day celebration before 8,165 spectators inside Stegeman Coliseum.
Blue Cain led Georgia (15-14, 5-11 SEC) in scoring off the bench for the third time this season with 11 points. Jabri Abdur-Rahim finished with 10 points after making three 3-pointers, while Silas Demary Jr. contributed nine points and three rebounds. Texas A&M (16-13, 7-9 SEC) finished the game on a 12-2 run after the Bulldogs got within four points of the Aggies.
Georgia opened the game firing on offense, connecting on six of their first 12 3-pointers in the first nine minutes. Texas A&M responded with a 13-3 run to claim the lead, though, carrying a 34-32 advantage to close the opening frame. The Aggies continued to extend their lead up to nine points before buckets from Cain and Abdur-Rahim trimmed it back down to four at the under-eight media timeout. The Bulldogs were unable to chip at the deficit any further down the stretch and eventually dropped the game.
Georgia will play in its final game inside Stegeman Coliseum on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. ET against Ole Miss. The game will be televised by the SEC Network. The Bulldogs hold a 74-48 record against the Rebels after splitting the series against them last season.
