BASEBALL: Georgia vs. Georgia Southern Tonight in North Augusta
The No. 18 Georgia Bulldogs face Georgia Southern Tuesday at SRP Park in N. Augusta, S.C. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m, and the game will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
Game two of the series will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Statesboro and available on ESPN+.
Georgia leads the Ga. Southern series 58-52-1. The teams split a two-game set last year with the road team winning both. In 2020, the Eagles upset then No. 2 Georgia 1-0 at SRP Park. The Bulldogs return home to Foley Field Friday for a three-game series with Lipscomb (7-4).
Redshirt sophomore RHP Will Childers will get the start Tuesday versus the Eagles. A 6-4, 210-pound product of Lakeside HS in nearby Evans, Childers will have plenty of family and friends in attendance at SRP Park. Childers is coming back from Tommy John surgery and hasn’t pitched since 2020. That year, he flashed power stuff, going 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA in 11.1 innings with 13 strikeouts before the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic canceled the season after only 18 games. He made five appearances including a start against Santa Clara where he got a no decision (3.1 IP, 3H, 1R, 3BB, 5K). His first career win came in his debut, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts against Richmond. Childers was a 30th round draft pick of Arizona in the 2019 MLB Draft. Childers will be opposed by GSU freshman LHP Will Robbins (0-0, 4.50 ERA). Neither team has announced a starter for Wednesday’s game.
Georgia is batting .296 with 12 home runs on the year while posting a 2.97 ERA and a .972 Fielding Percentage. Graduate CF Ben Anderson leads the regulars at .382-2-4 while graduate SS Cole Tate is next at .378-1-6 and sophomore C/DH Corey Collins is at .333-3-9. Tate had an eight-game hitting streak snap this past weekend while Collins had a career-best 15-game streak (last eight games in 2021 and first seven this year) end too. Tate has reached base in 11 straight games. Redshirt senior 3B Josh McAllister enjoyed a stellar showing at the plate last week. In four games, he batted .438 (7-for-16) with two doubles, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI.

SOFTBALL: Jayda Kearney Named SEC Player of the Week
Following a tremendous offensive weekend for the University of Georgia, sophomore outfielder Jayda Kearney has earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday afternoon.
“I’m really proud of Jayda and am excited for her to get recognized for her success this weekend,” said head coach Tony Baldwin. “She has been working hard to simplify the game and it was fun to see her hard work pay off.”
The Columbus, New Jersey native hit .727 in five games of the Bulldog Classic over the weekend, going 8-for-11 at the plate. She slugged 2.000 knocking four home runs and a triple, recording 22 total bases. She drove in 12 runs and scored six times. Her 12 RBI was nearly 30 percent of Georgia’s total run production on the weekend. She concluded the week with a .769 on base clip with no strikeouts.
Kearney notched her first career two-home run day in a five-inning victory over App State Sunday including the first grand slam of her career to put Georgia on the board. She tied a career-best four RBI against Ohio on Friday then set a new mark of six against App State.
As a team, Georgia hit 16 home runs in five games of the Bulldog Classic and slugged .880 on the weekend.
This is the second SEC honor for a Bulldog this season after freshman pitcher Kylie Macy was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 28.
Georgia hosts Georgia State Wednesday at Jack Turner Stadium to conclude its 16-game homestand. The Bulldogs and Panthers are set for a 6 p.m. first pitch. Georgia opens SEC play this weekend at South Carolina. The three-game series will begin Friday in Columbia.
