MBB: Georgia will face Xavier on Tuesday at 7:00 at Stegeman Coliseum in the opening round of the 2024 NIT

Tickets for Tuesday’s game will be $20 for adults and $10 for youth. As during the Bulldogs’ regular season, University of Georgia students will be admitted to the game free of charge.

Season tickets holders will receive information on ordering NIT tickets via correspondence from The Georgia Bulldog Club.

NIT tickets will go on sale to the general public at noon on Monday here.

Tickets also will be on sale at the Stegeman Coliseum box office on the Lumpkin Street side of the arena beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs are 17-16 on the season, including a 10-game winning streak which equaled the fourth-longest in the program’s 119 seasons of play.

Noah Thomasson leads an extremely balanced offensive attack for Georgia at 12.8 points per game, while Russel Tchewa paces Georgia on the boards at 6.7 rebounds per game. All told, seven Bulldogs are averaging 7.3 points or more per game.

Xavier is 16-17 overall and finished 9-11 in Big East play. The Musketeers upset Butler in the first round of the Big East Tournament before falling to top-seeded Connecticut. Quincy Olivari leads a trio of players averaging double-digits for the Musketeers at 19.4 ppg.

Georgia is making its first postseason appearance in seven years since the Bulldogs participated in the 2017 NIT. The bid is Georgia’s 15th to the NIT. The Bulldogs are 13-14 all-time in the tournament, including advancing to the semifinals in both 1982 and 1998.

Georgia has faced Xavier once before in postseason play. Following the Bulldogs’ improbable run through the 2008 SEC “Tornado” Tournament, Georgia faced Xavier in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Musketeers defeated the Bulldogs, 73-61, in Washington, D.C.

WTEN: Georgia sweeps LSU and the weekend

Mell Reasco

Coming off a hard-fought Friday night victory against No. 14 Texas A&M, the No. 10 Georgia women’s tennis team carried over all momentum into the end of the weekend as it swept LSU 4-0 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (11-3, 6-0 SEC) have now won nine-straight matches, taking sole possession of the top spot in the Southeastern Conference standings while also sitting as the last undefeated team in SEC play.

With the victory, Georgia now picks up its 50th win against the Tigers (10-6, 2-4 SEC) to lead the all-time series 50-4, winning each of the last 44 matchups.

Starting the day with doubles, the Bulldogs bounced back in the win column to lead 1-0 after dropping doubles points in its previous two matches.

The No. 8 tandem of Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova dominated from start to finish on court one as they delivered a bagel to defeat Kenna Erickson and Anita Sahdiieva (LSU), 6-0.

On court three, Alexandra Vecic and Mell Reasco found their groove early and never looked back as they clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Gaby Rivera and Maya Tahan (LSU).

“I thought doubles was awesome,” said head coach Drake Bernstein. “I thought we’ve played good doubles throughout the whole year, even on the two that we’ve lost. I felt like we played good doubles and it was nice to see that go our way on the scoreboard today.”

Moving on to singles play, No. 29 Vidmanova kept the momentum going on the Bulldogs’ side as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Aran Teixido Garcia (LSU) on court one.

Within a minute across the complex, No. 78 Nirundorn came up big on court six as she made quick work for a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Erickson (LSU) to give Georgia a 3-0 lead.

With close action in the first sets of court four and five, it was a race to the finish between courts two and three.

Ultimately, court two played host to the clincher as No. 25 Vecic capped off the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Florentine Dekkers (LSU) to secure the sweep for the Bulldogs.

“I think the team sent a strong message that we’re not satisfied, that we’re going to keep pushing, everyday we’re going to show up ready to play,” Bernstein said. “We came out, and even with the doubles point in our pocket, there’s still a sense of urgency in singles and I think that obviously showed in the results.”

Georgia will return to the road for one match next weekend where it will face off against No. 16 Tennessee on Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m. ET at Barksdale Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.

SB: The Dawgs late-inning comeback fell just short as No. 14/15 Alabama avoided a sweepseries with a 5-4 win

Lilli Backes

Georgia’s win streak is snapped at eight games as the Dogs fall to 22-5 on the season and 2-1 in SEC play.

Lyndi Rae Davis and Dallis Goodnight each recorded two hits in the game at the top of bottom of Georgia’s lineup. In all, the Bulldogs scattered seven hits.

Shelby Walters (5-2) suffered the loss in her start, allowing three runs in three innings of work. Madison Kerpics pitched three innings out of the pen while Lilli Backes pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Goodnight flared a one-out hit to left in the third then immediately stole second. She came in to score on a double to the wall in right off the bat of Davis to go ahead 1-0.

Alabama (22-5, 2-4) answered quickly with a leadoff home run in the fourth to tie the game at 1-all. Four more runs on a sac fly, an RBI double, and a two-RBI single put the Tide in front 5-1.

Georgia’s comeback started in the fifth when an Alabama error allowed Tyler Ellison to score, 5-2. Jaydyn Goodwin’s RBI double in the sixth narrowed the deficit further, 5-3.

Goodnight and Davis each singled to start the bottom of the seventh. After two outs, a passed ball allowed Goodnight to score and make it a one-run game, 5-4. Walks to Sydney Kuma and Goodwin loaded the bases, but Kayla Beaver’s fifth strikeout of the game ended the Bulldog comeback.

Georgia’s 10-game homestand will end on Wednesday when Georgia Southern comes to Athens. The midweek game will begin at 6 p.m. at Jack Turner Stadium.

Head Coach Tony Baldwin

On Sunday’s result…

“The only disappointing thing was the outcome. That’s softball right there, and I’m really proud of the way we played. Nobody wanted that big inning to happen, but it did. We stayed in it, competed, continued to scratch and claw, and gave ourselves a chance to win in the end. That’s all you can do when you’re playing a really good team – put yourself in the opportunity to win the game – and we did that. A lot of really good things over the weekend. We’ll put ourselves back together and get back to work on Tuesday. Looking forward to another great week.”

On the fans…

“Incredible. This has been what SEC softball is really all about. Again, I know it’s not the most convenient situation right now with the construction, parking and all that kind of stuff, but I’m just thankful for Dawg Nation coming out. They made an impact. We were really excited to play at home in front of our crowd, and we’ll look forward to getting some people here on Wednesday night, and we’ll be back in a couple of weeks.’

Box Score

BSB: Kentucky defeated Georgia 12-2 Sunday to complete an SEC opening weekend sweep

The Bulldogs (17-4, 0-3 SEC) took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run home run by junior catcher Henry Hunter. Graduate Paul Toetz was on base after a leadoff walk. It was Hunter’s fourth home run of the season and 13th of his career. In the third, Georgia loaded the bases with one out, but the Wildcats turned a double play to end the threat. Georgia finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

Kentucky (17-3, 3-0 SEC) responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs on three hits, all with two outs including a two-run double by Nick Lopez, an RBI-triple by Mitchell Daly and a two-run home run by Ryan Nicholson for a 5-2 advantage. In the fourth, Kentucky struck again with two outs, this time it was a two-run home run by Emilien Pitre to extend the lead to 7-2. It ended Jarvis Evans’ outing who came in for starter Christian Mracna who went 2.2 innings. Sophomore Zach Harris and graduate Brian Zeldin also saw action as Kentucky built a 12-2 lead before the game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Wildcat junior Mason Moore improved to 4-0, pitching six innings and struck out eight. Mracna got the loss to drop to 2-1.

“It was another day where the breaks didn’t go our way early and then when the snowball started down the hill, we couldn’t stop it,” said Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson. “We got to get better. We have to be able to stop it. We have to get better in the batter’s box, on the pitcher’s mound, and believe we can get out of a situation when things don’t go our way. The ball is not going to bounce your way every day, and it didn’t this weekend. We’re going to learn from it. We’re going to practice tomorrow and get better.”

Georgia returns to Foley Field for its next five games starting Tuesday against Wofford. First pitch is set for 5:02 p.m., and the game will be available on SECN+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
