BSB: Update – today’s game posponed due to weather – doubleheader tomorrow

Georgia’s Southeastern Conference baseball game here Friday against No. 8 Alabama has been postponed due to inclement weather. The teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.

Both games are scheduled for nine innings with 45 minutes between games. Foley Field will be cleared between games. Saturday’s first game will be televised on the SEC Network while the second game will be on SECN+. Dave Neal and Chris Burke will call both games for the network. The entire series will be broadcast on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network featuring Jeff Dantzler and David Johnston.

Fans holding tickets for Saturday’s originally scheduled noon game will be admitted only to game one of the doubleheader. Fans with tickets for Friday’s Georgia-Alabama game will be admitted only to the second game of the doubleheader Saturday. Georgia plays host to No. 8 Alabama starting Friday in the SEC home opener at Foley Field. The game times are 6 p.m. Friday, Noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Friday and Sunday’s action will be streamed on SECN+ while Saturday’s contest will be televised on the SEC Network. All games will be broadcast on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. There are limited tickets available for Friday and Sunday while Saturday’s game is sold out.

The Bulldogs (18-4, 0-3 SEC) dropped their opening league series at Kentucky last weekend while Alabama (18-3, 2-1 SEC) took two of three from No. 5 Tennessee in Tuscaloosa and consequently climb as high as No. 8 in the national top 25 rankings.

Georgia features one of the nation’s top offenses with an NCAA-leading 63 home runs while its .660 SLG% and 227 Runs rank second and .460 OB% is third nationally. A total of 14 Bulldogs have hit home runs. All-America 3B/1B/OF Charlie Condon ranks second in the NCAA with 14 home runs to go with an NCAA-best .513 batting average. Did You Know? The only SEC player to hit .500 in a season was Alabama’s Dave Magadan in 1983 when he posted a .525 mark. Former Bulldog great Ronnie Braddock ranks second in SEC history with a .489 batting average in 1962. Magadan has the SEC career mark too at .439. Currently, Condon’s career average is .420.­­

Georgia hit 101 home runs last year (Condon had 25) which ranked third most in school history. This squad is on pace to hit a school record 160 in the regular season! In the 18-6 win over Wofford this past Tuesday, Georgia blasted a season-high seven home runs including a school record-tying three by senior Corey Collins and two in the same inning by graduate Clayton Chadwick.

The Crimson Tide are coached by Rob Vaughn, who is in his first season after directing Maryland for the previous six years. Last week in Tuscaloosa, No. 5 Tennessee won the SEC opener 11-3 and UA bounced back with a 6-3 decision in game two and a 7-6 victory in game three to take the series. Junior 3B Gage Miller (.435-9-29) and senior Ole Miss transfer/CF TJ McCants (.398-10-30) headline the offense while senior LHP/Louisville transfer Greg Farone (3-0, 1.71 ERA, 25K, 3BB) anchors the pitching staff. 

Series History: Georgia leads the all-time series over UA 77-74-2 dating to 1904. They last met in 2022 when Georgia won a series in Tuscaloosa 2-1 while UA beat the Bulldogs at the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. The Bulldogs swept UA in its last visit to Foley Field in 2019.

Saturday’s game is set for 4 p.m. ET, with Sunday’s finale slated for 2 p.m. ET.

Recapping Action

Georgia routed Georgia Southern Wednesday evening 17-1 in five innings. Jaydyn Goodwin had a career game. She hit two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, and drove in a career-high six runs. All 17 Georgia position players played in Wednesday’s game, and 13 Bulldogs recorded hits. Behind Goodwin, Georgia scattered 15 hits, including four home runs and five doubles. No Georgia batter struck out. Along with Goodwin, Jaiden Fields also had two hits. Four Bulldogs, including Lyndi Rae Davis, Tyler Ellison, Marisa Miller, and Goodwin, drove in multiple runs on the night.

A Look at What’s Ahead

The Bulldogs will travel down the road to Kennesaw State on Wednesday to close the road swing. First pitch in Kennesaw is set for 6:30 p.m. against the Owls. Georgia returns to Athens to host Arkansas in a three-game series. The series begins Saturday at 12 p.m.

Coaching Connections

Ole Miss director of operations Savana Sikes played for the Red and Black from 2019-22. She was a member of Georgia’s 2021 Women’s College World Series team. Sikes graduated from UGA with her Management degree in May 2022.

Goodwin Has Monster Game Against Georgia Southern

Sophomore Jaydyn Goodwin had a career game against Georgia Southern on March 20, blasting two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, driving in six of Georgia’s 17 runs in the game. It was the first time she hit two home runs in a game and it was her first career grand slam. Both home runs were on the first pitch of her at-bats.

Leadoff Lyndi Finds New Home in Order

Lyndi Rae Davis has found a new spot at the top of the Georgia batting order. Since taking over the leadoff role on March 8, Davis has drawn 12 walks in 10 games and put together a .595 on-base clip. Twice, she’s drawn three walks in a game, both career-highs. She leads Georgia with 22 walks this season. Her 0.81 walks per game ranks third in the SEC.

The First Serve: Georgia has won 21-straight matches against LSU and are undefeated against the Tigers in the 21^st century. Georgia’s last loss to LSU came in Baton Rouge on April 4, 1999, by a 4-3 result.

Against Arkansas, Georgia is 34-3 all-time and riding a six-match win streak. The Razorbacks have never beaten the Bulldogs at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, with all three of their wins in the series coming outside of Athens. 15 of Georgia’s 34 wins over Arkansas have come by a sweep, and the Razorbacks have never swept the Bulldogs.

One of three ties in the history of Georgia men’s tennis came against The Citadel in the first meeting between the programs – the teams played to a 4.5-4.5 tie on March 30, 1961. Georgia and The Citadel’s match will mark the first match between the schools in 61 years, with the most recent contest coming in Athens with Georgia earning a 6-3 win during the 1963 season.

Last Time Out: Georgia hosted No. 9 Texas in Athens on Thursday, March 14, narrowly falling by a 4-3 score before heading to College Station, Texas to take on No. 12 Texas A&M, where it fell to the Aggies by a 5-2 result.

The Bulldogs and Longhorns fought in a lengthy three-hour, 27-minute match on Thursday evening at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs’ (6-7, 1-3 SEC) Niels Ratiu defeated the Longhorns’ (11-3) No. 48 Giles-Arnaud Bailly, who peaked in the International Tennis Federation world rankings at No. 1 in 2022, on court three. The match marked Ratiu’s highest-ranked singles win of his collegiate career as he handed Bailly just his second loss of the spring. Thursday’s result marks the fourth-straight match between Georgia and Texas to finish in a 4-3 decision.

Against Texas A&M (16-4, 5-1 SEC), the Bulldogs (7-9, 1-4 SEC) won the doubles point but were unable to get the three wins they needed in singles play, with the Aggies taking courts one through five. In the singles competition, Filipe Costa won his first SEC match of his career, taking the match by a 7-5, 6-1 score on court six over Luke Casper. The Aggies fought back to take a 3-2 lead over the Bulldogs as Cyrus Mahjoob and Ratiu both moved to third sets, with Texas A&M taking the final two matches.

Dawgs in the Rankings: In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings that were updated on Tuesday, March 19, Georgia moved to No. 40 in the country as a team. In singles, a trio of Bulldogs were featured in the rankings, led by No. 58 Ryan Colby, who mans court two and holds nine ranked wins on the year. He is followed by the team’s choice for the top court, No. 61 Thomas Paulsell, and court four, No. 81 Miguel Perez Peña.
