KEY QUOTES:

Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Wes Johnson

On the message to the team coming into the weekend…

“There’s two more to go. I just told them right there to come out and play with confidence and stay hungry. You can’t get comfortable in this game. If you do or you start thinking you’ve done something or accomplished something, that’s when somebody’s going to sneak up and get you. We’re going to have a huge point of emphasis tomorrow. It doesn’t guarantee anything. It’s just like tonight. Charlie [Goldstein] got off to a rough start. I thought J.T. Quinn was lights out and settled us down. We played a relatively clean game, but we can still play cleaner, and we played clean enough off the offense too.”

On coming back from being down 3-0 in the first inning…

“Our team’s done a lot, right this year. I just kept telling our guys they’ve got to get us out 27 times, and we’re really good. Start believing in yourself. Tip your hat to our offense there in the third. I thought what Slate [Alford] and Tre [Phelps] did right there to get that inning going. Tre faced a tough pitch. That ball was in on the white line. He pulled his hands in and smoked it. Obviously, Dan Jackson’s ball might be over the tennis court, so he crushed that thing. But that’s what our offense is capable of doing. We don’t chase, don’t expand the strike zone, and we stay disciplined and lock in and play baseball.”

#10 Robbie Burnett | Sr. | INF/OF

On his at-bats and approach at the plate after his first inning home run…

“I just wanted to go up there at the next at bat and just keep the same energy and focus, instead of just sitting on that one home run. I go right back up, and whatever happens, happens. We have really good coaching and have faith in each other. We just want to do it for the guy behind us.”

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs (41-13, 17-11 SEC) are back in action tomorrow evening for game two with the Aggies with first pitch set for 6:02 p.m. E.T. on SEC Network+.

BSB: Robbie Burnett And Ryland Zaborowski Are Howser Trophy Semifinalists

University of Georgia standouts Robbie Burnett and Ryland Zaborowski have been named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy presented by The Game Headwear; it was announced Thursday.

Burnett and Zaborowski have been among the nation’s top sluggers this season, helping fourth-ranked Georgia to a 40-13 mark. Zaborowski, a graduate and native of Gilbert, Ariz., leads the team with a .372 batting average, plus has 16 home runs and 58 RBI in 40 games, including 39 starts. Burnett, a senior native of Franklinton, N.C., has a team-high 19 home runs, 63 RBI and 16 stolen bases to go with a .309 batting average in 52 games with 51 starts. Burnett has made starts at all three outfield spots plus second base and designated hitter. Zaborowski has started at first base, third base and designated hitter.

The Dick Howser Trophy goes to the nation’s top player following two rounds of national voting by the Howser Committee and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The 2025 finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 7.  The winner will be unveiled on the MLB Network in a special national presentation in Omaha, Neb., on June 13 before this year’s NCAA College World Series.

This year’s candidates hail from 39 different schools, and the Southeastern Conference leads with 17 semifinalists. The Dick Howser Trophy is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987.

The trophy is regarded as baseball’s most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life. In 2024, Georgia’s Charlie Condon swept the national awards including the Dick Howser Trophy.

The fourth-ranked Bulldogs will finish the SEC regular season with a three-game series against Texas A&M starting Thursday at Foley Field. The first pitch will be at 6:02 p.m. and will be available on SECN+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
