Softball Highlights: Georgia fell to South Carolina in extra-innings 2-1 in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals

Madison Kerpics pitched five innings in her start, suffering a no-decision. Kerpics allowed one run on two hits, striking out six and walking only one batter. Shelby Walters (17-5) suffered the loss in relief, allowing one run on three hits in three innings out of the pen. Walters struck out three batters.

Senior Sara Mosley was responsible for two of Georgia’s five hits, including a double. Sydney Chambley’s third-inning home run was the Dogs’ lone run.

Chambley’s eighth home run of the season put Georgia on the board in the bottom of the third, 1-0.

South Carolina’s Riley Blampied quickly knotted the contest in the top of the fourth with a solo home run of her own, 1-1.

The 1-1 draw held as the game was sent to extra innings.

With a runner on second in the top of the eighth, Jaydyn Goodwin’s throw home from left threw the runner out at the plate to keep the game tied. A batter later, South Carolina broke through with an RBI single to right, going ahead 2-1.

The Bulldogs put two on in the bottom of the eighth, but didn’t score, falling in eight innings 2-1. 

Georgia will await the NCAA Tournament selection show airing Sunday, May 14 at 7 p.m., ET, live on ESPN 2.

T&F: Marc Minichello collected a javelin crown at SEC Outdoor Championships

Minichello made a 36-foot improvement between his fourth and fifth tosses in the javelin to clinch Georgia’s 12^th SEC javelin title all-time.  Minichello, a Penn graduate, won his crown with the Bulldogs’ 2009 SEC champion and Sulphur, La., native Chris Hill watching from the stands.

Following day one, the Georgia men tallied 18 points and lead while the Lady Bulldogs have scored three points and are in eighth place.  Through three events scored for both genders, Missouri (22) has the early edge for the women.

The Bulldogs also had an additional three scorers who finished in the top eight during day one: Alencar Pereira in the hammer throw (2^nd – 70.07 meters/229 feet, 10 inches), Erin McMeniman in the javelin (7^th – 49.06m/160-11) and Julia Harisay in the javelin (8^th – 48.45m/158-11).

Georgia also had four competitors punch their tickets to event finals.  Will Sumner (800 meters), Matthew Boling (200m), Kaila Jackson (200m) and Caleb Cavanaugh (400m hurdles).

The decathlon’s collegiate record holder, Kyle Garland, flexed his muscle during the opening day of the dec with the No. 2 all-time collegiate day one score.  The Philadelphia, Pa., native posted two personal bests, including one that was a meet record, to score 4,626 points.  The nearest competitor, Mississippi State’s Peyton Bair, has scored 4,263. 

Garland’s 4,660 points from day one of the 2022 USATF Combined Event Championships is the all-time collegiate day one best score.  His score on Thursday topped his previous SEC meet record for day one of 4,377 from the 2021 meet that he won.

Matthew Boling qualifies for 200m final with a 20.36 (6th) while Keshaun Black (20.82) & Christopher Morales Williams (20.98) finish with lifetime bests.

When Do The Bulldogs Start Friday?: Garland begins his final five events of the decathlon (110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500m) on day two at 12 p.m. ET.  Georgia’s first open event on Friday is the men’s shot put with Gavin Beverage aiming to score at 5:15 p.m.  The first open event on the track for the Bulldogs is the 100m hurdles with Bella Witt set to line up on the starting line at 6:15 p.m.

Baseball: UGA will begin its final regular season road series tonight at Missouri

-Georgia (28-21, 10-14 SEC) has its final SEC regular season road trip starting Friday when it faces Missouri (27-20, 7-17 SEC) in Columbia. First pitch will be at 7:02 p.m. and be available on SEC Network+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. 

The Bulldogs are 9-5 in their last 14 SEC games following a 1-9 start in the league. Georgia is 3-9 on the road in the SEC while Missouri is 6-6 at home. Last weekend, the Tigers won a series 2-1 over Ole Miss while the Bulldogs claimed a home series over No. 18 Tennessee 2-1. 

Series History: Georgia holds a 15-12 edge in the series with Missouri including 14-10 in the Scott Stricklin era. The road team has claimed the last two series 2-1. Georgia won it in Columbia in 2021 while the Tigers took the series in Athens last year.  

On The Mound:  The Bulldogs have a 6.07 ERA with 451 strikeouts and 238 walks. Opponents are batting .267 versus Georgia. Missouri a 5.76 ERA with 429 strikeouts and 202 walks. Opponents are hitting .249 against the Tigers. For game one Friday, Georgia will start freshman RHP Kolten Smith (2-2, 4.81) while the Tigers counter with senior RHP Chandler Murphy (3-4, 5.69). The Bulldogs have not announced starters for games two and three. Missouri’s game two starter will be junior LHP Javyn Pimental (1-0, 4.60) and the Tigers are TBA for game three. 

At The Plate: Georgia is batting .289 with 87 home runs, a .389 OB% and is 32-for-38 in stolen base attempts. Redshirt freshman Charlie Condon is chasing the team’s triple crown, batting .410-22-62. Also, Condon ranks among the SEC leaders in batting, home runs, total bases and slugging percentage. Graduate Connor Tate ranks leads the SEC with 76 hits (one more than Condon) and is second on the club in batting at .390-13-50. Junior Parks Harber is next at .277-16-51. 

      The Tigers are batting .268 with 65 home runs, a .383 OB% and are 59-for-76 in stolen base attempts. Their leading hitters are senior Luke Mann (.326-17-45) and graduate Hank Zeisler (.307-14-54). 

Got That Degree: When the 2023 season began, the Bulldog roster featured six graduates. After Saturday, that number will climb to 10 as pitchers Charlie Goldstein, Bryce Melear, Michael Polk and Jaden Woods will be the latest Bulldogs to earn a degree.

NCAA History 

The Georgia women — which won the 2023 SEC tournament title — receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 36th-straight year with an all-time tournament record of 89-33. The 2023 season marks the 12th consecutive year the Bulldogs have earned a host position for the first and second rounds of the tournament. The Georgia women have two NCAA titles (1994 and 2000), while a Bulldog has won the NCAA singles championship three times (1984 Lisa Spain, 1994 Angela Lettiere, and 2010 Chelsey Gullickson). 

Five Bulldogs Earn All-SEC Honors 

Lea Ma, a senior from Dix Hills, New York, and Dasha Vidmanova, a sophomore from Prague, Czech Republic, were named First-Team All-SEC. Meanwhile, Meg Kowalski, a graduate from Chicago, Illinois, and Mell Reasco, a sophomore from Quito, Ecuador, were named Second-Team All-SEC. Anastasiia Lopata, a freshman from Kiev, Ukraine, made the SEC All-Freshman team.

Five Bulldogs Earn Bids to NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship 

Senior Lea Ma and sophomores Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova will represent the Bulldogs in singles action, while sophomores Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn will represent Georgia in doubles.

Tickets for this weekend’s matches go on sale online at Georgia Bulldogs | Online Ticket Office | Event Groups (evenue.net). Fans can also purchase tickets at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex beginning one hour prior to the start of the first match each day (based on availability). Will call opens at 4 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth and seniors.
