More 2024 kickoff times announced by the SEC

Another pair of 2024 Bulldog games now have kickoff times and network assignments, according to an SEC announcement Thursday.

Georgia will play host to Tennessee Tech on Sept. 7 and the 2 p.m. ET kickoff will be featured on ESPN+/SECN+.  In their final regular season game, the Bulldogs will welcome Georgia Tech to town on Nov. 29 and ABC will televise the matchup at 7:30 p.m.  This marks the first time Georgia has played the Yellow Jackets on a Friday since 1994, which also marks the Bulldogs’ last non-Saturday game in Sanford Stadium.  A year before that (1993) and a year after that (1995), the Bulldogs played Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Thanksgiving day.

Also of note, Georgia’s Oct. 5 matchup with Auburn in Athens will be Homecoming.  No kickoff time has been announced.

Four game times had already been announced for Georgia’s slate.  The Bulldogs’ matchup against Clemson in the Aflac Kickoff Classic (Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta) will be at noon on Aug. 31 while Georgia’s game at Alabama is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 28.  Both of these games will also be on ABC.

In addition, the Bulldogs will travel to Lexington, Ky., to face Kentucky on Sept. 14 and ABC will televise the matchup at 7:30 p.m.  Following its second off week of the season, Georgia will make its annual trip to Jacksonville to square off against Florida at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 on ABC.

WBB: UGA adds transfer from USCw

Roxane Makolo, a 5-foot-10 guard who played one season at the University of Southern California, has announced she will transfer and join the Georgia women’s basketball team, head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson announced Thursday.

Makolo appeared in 23 games for a USC team that advanced to last season’s NCAA Elite Eight.  She will have one year of eligibility remaining at Georgia.

The Saint-Hubert, Quebec, Canada, native transferred to USC after playing her senior season at TCU. She drew 19 starts for the Horned Frogs and averaged 5.8 points and 3.5 rebounds to go with six double-figure scoring games during the 2022-23 campaign.

Makolo was a four-year member of the Canadian National Team, earning silver with Canada at the 2023 GLOBL Jam. She also guided Canada to a sixth-place finish at the U19 FIBA Women’s World Championships, averaging 7.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest. Scoring close to 10 points per game, she also led Canada to a second-place finish at the U18 FIBA Americas and guided the team to gold at the 2015 U16 Americas.

As the No. 2 overall recruit and No. 1 guard in Canada coming out of high school, Makolo was a highly-sought after prospect. She competed for two seasons at Dawson College, averaging 14.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game during her senior season. In 2017, she was voted the RSEQ Most Valuable Player and the RSEG Rookie of the Year.

Makolo is the sixth signee in Georgia’s 2024 class. She joins four top-100 freshmen —  Indya and Summer Davis, Mia Woolfolk and Trinity Turner, as well as Kentucky transfer Nyah Leveretter. The Lady Bulldogs are the only SEC program to have four or more signees ranked in the ESPN top-100 in a class that ranks No. 16 nationally.

WTEN: Dawgs welcome three signees

Coming off a highly-successful campaign under first-year head coach Drake Bernstein, the Georgia women’s tennis team is set to welcome three new signees to the program, Bernstein announced Wednesday.

The Bulldogs are bringing in transfer junior Sofia Rojas as well as incoming freshmen Sarah Branicki and Hayden Mulberry.

Sofia Rojas

Rojas, who last played for Oklahoma State in 2023, comes to Athens after two seasons with the Cowgirls. She posted a 28-14 overall record and a 14-6 dual match singles record as a sophomore, playing at the No. 3-6 spots in singles. During the 2022-23 season Rojas recorded wins over the current #3 (Oby Ange Kujuru) and #20 (Malaika Rapolu) ranked players in the ITA Singles Rankings. Rojas also played at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, sharing court time with four different partners. Rojas ended her sophomore season with Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors. As a freshman in 2022, Rojas tallied a 10-5 record in singles while playing a couple of doubles matches, finishing her first collegiate season with ITA Division I Scholar-Athlete honors.

Sarah Branicki

Branicki, who comes to Athens from Marietta, is a four-star recruit listed as the Tennis Recruiting Network’s No. 58-ranked player nationally and the No. 6 player in the state of Georgia. The 5-foot-10 right-hander reached the doubles quarterfinals of the USTA Winter National Championships and the round of 16 in the USTA National Hard Court Championships in 2023.

Hayden Mulberry

Mulberry, who also joins the Bulldogs from Marietta, is a five-star recruit listed as the Tennis Recruiting Network, nationally ranked as high as No. 32 in the nation in 2024 and No.9 in 2022. She has been named the AJC Player of the Year three times throughout her high school career at Walton, where she won three-consecutive state championships.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) presents the Rawlings Gold Glove Award to the top nine defensive players from all collegiate divisions.

“What an honor for Sydney,” head coach Tony Baldwin said. “I am so proud of her. She has worked incredibly hard on her defense over the years. She is an incredible athlete who has done some extraordinary things on the field in her career. I’m thankful that she has been recognized for all she has done for our program on defense.”

Kuma becomes the first Georgia Bulldog to earn the Rawlings Gold Glove Award. The Fresno, California native has been one of the most prolific defensive players in the country in her career at UGA. In her final season in the Red and Black, Kuma fielded a career-best .974. She raised her fielding percentage year-over-year since her true freshman season in 2020. She committed just six errors in 230 chances in 2024. She completed 129 putouts with 95 assists and turned 19 double plays. Kuma finished fifth all-time at UGA with 390 assists.

As a team, Kuma led the defense to its best fielding percentage since the program record of .981 was set in 2009. The Bulldogs’ .976 fielding percentage is the second-highest in program history.

Both Georgia track and field’s Christopher Morales Williams and Micah Larry have earned annual Southeastern Conference outdoor awards, according to a league announcement Wednesday.

Morales Williams, a sophomore native of Vaughan, Ontario, was named the Men’s Runner of the Year while Larry, a true freshman native of Harvest, Ala., garnered Men’s Freshman Field Athlete of the Year accolades.

Morales Williams is the first Bulldog to earn this honor since the award’s inception in 2004.  Larry is the third Georgia student-athlete to collect this honor after Maicel Uibo and Alex Poursanidis went back to back in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Also winning the SEC indoor award this year, Morales Williams captured his first SEC 400-meter dash outdoor title with a world-leading and Canadian, school, meet and facility record mark of 44.05.  This time made the 2024 NCAA indoor champion the No. 6 all-time outdoor collegiate performer.  Morales Williams won his two regular season meets with times of 44.91 and 45.18.  At last week’s NCAA East Prelims, Morales Williams qualified for the NCAA final rounds with a 45.03 in Lexington, Ky.

Larry earned a silver medal in the long jump at the SEC Championships with a personal best effort of 7.80 meters/25 feet, 7 ¼ inches.  That mark made him the No. 3 freshman on the 2024 NCAA list and No. 10 on UGA’s all-time top-10 list.  Larry won the long jump at the Hurricane Collegiate Invite (7.41m/24-3.75) and had a wind-aided 10.09 in the 100m and legal 10.24 in the 100m as well during his first year.

Morales Williams and the rest of his qualified teammates will compete at next week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
