WBB: Katie Abrahamson-Henderson lands four, four-stars
Trinity Turner (Orlando, Florida), Mia Woolfolk (Midlothian, Virginia), and Indya and Summer Davis — twin sisters from Farmington Hills, Michigan — have signed national letters of intent with the Georgia women’s basketball program, head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson announced Wednesday.
All four of the 2024 signees earned four-star rankings from ESPN.com and will be freshmen at the beginning of the 2024-25 season. This marks the first time since 2017 that Georgia has signed four or more players ranked in the top 100.
Turner plays high school basketball at Dr. Phillips in Orlando, Florida. She is a four-star point guard who is ranked No. 73 nationally by ESPN.com. Turner is considered one of the top players in the state of Florida as she led Dr. Phillips to back-to-back 7A state titles, boasting a 23-1 overall record in 2022 and a 30-1 mark in 2023. She also played for Essence AAU basketball team.
Turner was named the 2023 MaxPreps Florida High School Girls Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 4.6 steals per game, scoring in double figures in all but two contests. In the state championship game, she scored a game-high 22 points to lead her team to another crown.
Woolfolk is a 6-foot-2 post player who preps at Manchester High School in Midlothian, Virginia. She is a four-star forward and is ranked No. 77 overall in the class of 2024 by ESPN. Woolfolk was named the Richmond Times Dispatch Player of the Year and led the Lancers to a state title game appearance after averaging an impressive 19 points and 11 rebounds per contest in her junior campaign. Woolfolk also played for Boo Williams AAU team.
Indya — a 5-foot-9 wing prospect who is ranked No. 66 overall nationally — was the 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Michigan after averaging 15.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game with nine double-doubles. Summer is a 5-foot-9 combo guard who averaged 19.1 points, 3.3 assists, and 4.0 steals per game and joined her sister on the Associated Press First-Team All-State team. The pair helped lead the Lakers to a second-straight title game appearance as Summer went over the career 1,000-point mark during the team’s quarterfinal win. Each played AAU basketball with the Michigan Storm.
The Davis twins will join a longline of twin basketball players within the UGA women’s basketball program — Camille and Miriam Lowe in 1990-93, Kelly and Coco Miller in 1998-01, and Kara and Kim Braxton from 2002-04.
These four signees are the first of the 2024 class for Coach ABE and her staff. The early signing period ran from Nov. 8-15, while the regular signing period starts on April 17 and runs through May 15, 2024.
Malaki Starks Named 2023 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Finalist
Georgia sophomore safety Malaki Starks has been named a 2023 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Finalist, given annually to the nation’s top defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, it was announced Wednesday.
Starks, a native of Jefferson, Ga., has 33 tackles and two interceptions during his second year starting for the Bulldogs. A consensus Midseason All-American, he is also a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s best defensive back. Starks has helped Georgia rank sixth nationally in scoring defense, allowing only 15.6 points per game, and ninth nationally in total defense at 289.2 yards per game.
Starks is one of five Nagurski Trophy finalists, joining cornerback Cooper DeJean (Iowa), defensive tackle Jer’Zahn Newton (Illinois), safety Xavier Watts (Notre Dame) and linebacker Payton Wilson (N.C. State). The winner will be announced Monday, Dec. 4 in Charlotte during an awards banquet. This is the third consecutive year that a Bulldog has been a finalist.
Former Bulldog and Pro Football Hall of Famer Champ Bailey has been Georgia’s only winner of the Nagurski Trophy, bringing it home in 1998. Georgia’s other finalists have been lineman David Pollack (2002 & 2004), linebacker Justin Houston (2010), linebacker Roquan Smith (2017), safety J.R. Reed (2019), lineman Jordan Davis (2021) and safety Christopher Smith (2022).
Brock Bowers named finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award for the second straight year
Last year, Bowers, a native of Napa, Calif., joined former teammate and current Philadelphia Eagle Jalen Carter as finalists. Dating back to 1998 with Matt Stinchcomb’s selection as a finalist, the Bulldogs have had seven finalists: David Pollack, 2003-04; Jarvis Jones, 2012; Bowers, Carter, 2022. Pollack won the honor in 2004.
The winner of the 2023 award will be announced during a formal dinner and award ceremony on Dec. 6 at the Royal Sonesta in Houston.
Bowers leads the Bulldogs in receiving with 44 catches for 601 yards and five touchdowns in only eight games played this season. He also has six carries for 28 yards and a score during Georgia’s 10-0 start. Bowers is ranked second all-time in school history in Touchdown Receptions (25), fifth in Receiving Yards (2,425) and fifth in Pass Receptions (163).
