WBB: UGA beats Mercer 77-57
A season-high shooting effort fueled a 77-57 victory for the University of Georgia women’s basketball team over the Mercer Bears Thursday evening at Hawkins Arena.
Javyn Nicholson tallied her fourth career 20-point game to lead the Georgia (3-1) offensive effort. Zoesha Smith sank a season-high 18 points, marking the third double figure scoring performance in the last four games. Destiny Thomas paced the Lady Bulldogs in the paint, grabbing a season-high 11 boards for the 32nd double digit rebound game of her career. De’Mauri Flournoy contributed 11 points of her own and dished out a team-leading five assists.
Georgia grabbed an early 7-3 lead to open the first frame. Mercer (1-3) responded with a pair of triples before the Lady Bulldogs used an uncontested eight points to boost their lead by nine, 15-6. Four points from the Bears closed the first quarter as Georgia carried a 17-11 lead into the second quarter.
Both teams used short scoring runs in the second period as the Lady Bulldogs continued to lead. A five-point run was fueled by three points from Chloe Chapman. Mercer concluded the first half with a pair of 3-pointers as Georgia took a 38-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Eight points from Nicholson in the third quarter contributed to the Lady Bulldogs’ lead. Georgia posted a 12-3 run late in the quarter. The Bears answered with five points before Nicholson grabbed a layup to give Georgia a 56-43 lead to start the fourth.
Back-to-back baskets by Nicholson sparked a 7-0 scoring run to open the final frame. A 10-2 run highlighted by Flournoy’s third triple of the evening gave Georgia its final, 77-57, boost.
WTennis: Seven Bulldogs make the end of fall ITA Division I women’s tennis rankings
Seven Bulldogs represented the Georgia women’s tennis team on the end of fall Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I women’s tennis rankings released on Wednesday.
In the singles rankings, Georgia had five Bulldogs crack the list of 125, marking the most ranked players in the Southeastern Conference.
Junior Dasha Vidmanova posted the highest ranking at No. 30 after a strong fall slate with a 7-2 record, a singles title at Furman and a run to the ITA-All American Championships quarterfinals.
Sophomore Alexandra Vecic made her debut in the rankings following closely behind at No. 35 with a 3-0 record but an impressive resume in ITF competition and a Furman singles title of her own.
Fellow sophomore Anastasiia Lopata found herself back in the rankings slotted in at No. 70 with a 9-4 record and an ITA Southeast Regional Championships semifinal appearance.
Junior Mai Nirundorn entered the singles ranking at No. 108 after her 14-5 fall record highlighted by a singles title at Furman as well as six consecutive wins to advance from pre-qualifying to the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
Junior Mell Reasco rounded out the Bulldogs on the list at No. 108 after posting a 3-0 record and making noise in ITF competition.
In the doubles rankings, Georgia had two pairings in the list of 60 which tied for most in the SEC.
The duo of Nirundorn and junior Guillermina Grant came in ranked at No. 15 after posting an 8-4 record in the fall with two different win streaks of three matches, earning a doubles title at Furman and making a run to the consolation doubles final at the ITA All-American Championships.
Joining them were the newly formed tandem of Vidmanova and freshman Aysegul Mert making their debut at No. 58 with a 6-5 record in fall play and an impressive four wins through six matches at the ITA All-American Championships.
The Georgia women’s team will resume its season at the end of the winter break when it competes in the Michigan Invitational on Jan. 12-14, 2024.
