WTEN: Dasha Vidmanova Advances to NCAA Singles Championships Quarterfinal

WACO, Texas — Dasha Vidmanova advanced to the NCAA Singles Championships quarterfinal with a round of 16 victory at the Hurd Tennis Center on Thursday.

  • #2 Dasha Vidmanova opened the morning in the singles round of 16 where she faced off against Pepperdine’s 9-16 Savannah Broadus. Vidmanova jumped out to a flying start, taking a 3-0 lead early before closing out the first set 6-2. Despite a slower start in the second set to trail 3-2, Vidmanova secured the next four games to take the set and match 6-2, 6-3.
  • The victory marked back-to-back seasons with Vidmanova advancing to the NCAA singles quarterfinals.
  • Coming off a round of 32 victory to open the doubles bracket, Aysegul Mert and Guillermina Grant faced off against Virginia’s Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard in the doubles round of 16. Despite falling 2-6 in the first set, the Bulldog duo battled back in a tight second set to win 6-4 and level the match to force a third set breaker. A short lead early quickly became a back-and-forth battle at 6-6, but Mert and Grant came up just short as they fell in the third set breaker and in the match 2-6, 6-4, 0(7)-1(10).

WBB: Georgia Opens WBCA Showcase with a 60-44 Win Over Tulsa

Led by senior guards Asia Avinger and De’Mauri Flournoy, the Georgia women’s basketball team knocked off the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the first game of the 2024 WBCA Showcase. 

Fast Facts

• Avinger joined the 1,000 point club with 13 points on Thursday. She is the 45th player in program history to score 1,000 career points and the third graduate transfer to do so. 

• Flournoy led all scorers with a career-high 19 points. She hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first half and scored 13 of her 19 points in the opening 20 minutes.  

• Georgia held Tulsa to just 19 percent from the field in the first half as the Golden Hurricane hit just five total shots in the first 20 minutes. Tulsa finished with a 28 percent clip for the game. 

• Georgia made a season-high seven 3-pointers in the win. 

• The Lady Bulldogs forced 18 turnovers, scoring 17 points off those Tulsa miscues. 

• Georgia improves its record to 4-2 this season.
