WBB: Javyn Nicholson paces Georgia in win over Perdue

Javyn Nicholson scored a game-high 18 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Georgia women’s basketball team to a 65-57 victory Wednesday evening in the final game of the 2023 Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. 

Georgia has won four consecutive games and improves to 5-1 overall this season. The Lady Bulldogs have won 14 of their last 19 contests dating back to last season’s NCAA Tournament run. 

Nicholson added nine rebounds to her 18-point effort, while Taniyah Thompson scored a UGA career best of 16 points. Georgia’s bench outscored Purdue, 36-10, and Georgia held a 43-31 edge in rebounding. 

The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as six points in the first half, but foul trouble in the post plagued Georgia late in the second quarter. With Nicholson and Jordan Cole both on the bench with two fouls, Georgia shot just 4-of-17 from the field in the second frame with the score knotted at 28-28 at the break. 

Ellis scored five-straight points out of halftime as Purdue built a 36-31 advantage with an 8-0 run. It was all Georgia from there, as the Lady Bulldogs once again dominated the fourth quarter, outpacing the Boilermakers 19-13 in the final 10 minutes. 

Georgia now returns home to host Duke on Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. ET as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. 

WGolf: UGA signs four All-Americans

The Georgia women’s golf team has signed four highly rated prospects to join the Bulldogs for the 2024-25 season – three prep prospects and a junior college transfer. The signees who will be freshmen in 2024-25 include two-time AJGA All-American Siuue Wu, her twin sister Tsamue and Zixin (Candice) Lou. Angelica Holman, a first-team junior college All-American last season, also will join the Georgia roster next fall.

“This is always a rewarding time of the year,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “It’s exciting for our four signees, their families and our program, welcoming them to the University of Georgia and the Bulldog Nation. We’ve added a great recruiting class. We expect each of them to come in and make an impact Year 1 and help us continue the run we’ve been on the past several years playing well and winning championships in the postseason.”

Siuue (pronounced soo-wee) Wu was recently named a Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) for the second consecutive year. She was a second-team selection in 2023 after earning honorable mention honors in 2022. Wu, who qualified for the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in 2022 and 2023, has competed in 26 tournaments over the past two years, recording 12 top-10s and five wins – three in 2022 and two in 2023.

Tsamue (pronounced suh-moo-ee) competed in five AJGA events in 2023, posting top-10 efforts at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Vaughn Taylor Championship presented by James Hardie. She has competed in 27 events on the Florida Junior Tour from 2021-23 and notched 18 top-10s and a pair of wins in 2023 at Indian Spring and 2021 at the Cypress Creek Open.

The Wu sisters qualified for the 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship, shooting 1-under 143 in qualifying and missing the match play cut by two strokes.

Lou has competed primarily in China over the past two years. She has recorded seven top-10 finishes in 11 events, with a best effort of third at the 2022 Buick National Junior Class. Lou competed in two tournaments in the U.S. last June, finishing sixth at the Colorado Springs Junior presented by Centura Health and 13th at the AJGA Colorado Junior at Walnut Creek.

Holman, a native of Fort Pierce, Fla., was named first-team All-America for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) last spring after finishing sixth individually and leading Daytona State College to a runner-up finish at the 2023 NJCAA National Championships. Daytona State traditionally plays primarily a Division I schedule. Holman has participated in 13 tournaments in a season and a half with the Falcons, recording four top-10 finishes.

Georgia has long been one of the nation’s premier women’s golf programs. The Bulldogs have captured four national titles – one team and three individual. Georgia has recorded top-20 team efforts at the national championships during 29 of the last 45 years, including finishes of 18th, fifth and 14th as the last three NCAA Championships. 

In addition, the Bulldogs have swept team and individual titles at NCAA Regionals in three of the last eight seasons. Georgia and Stanford are the only two women’s golf programs to sweep three Regionals during that time frame.
