MBB: Tyrin Lawrence and Dakota Leffew Chat with Media in Advance of UGA’s First Preseason Game

Georgia basketball players Tyrin Lawrence and Dakota Leffew took part in a media availability on Monday to discuss the team’s progress in preseason practices to date and the Bulldogs’ upcoming exhibition game at Charlotte this Saturday.

Georgia will face Charlotte at noon on Saturday in the first of two preseason exhibitions. The Bulldogs also will host UCF on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Stegeman Coliseum, with proceeds from that contest benefitting UGA Miracle.

Georgia will open its regular-season slate on Monday, Nov. 4 against Tennessee Tech at 7:30 p.m.. That contest is the second game of a doubleheader also featuring the Georgia Lady Bulldogs against N.C. Central at 5:00 p.m.

Tickets for the exhibition game and doubleheader are available at www.georgiadogs.com/mbbtix.

Lawrence, is a 6-4, graduate guard from Monticello, Ga., and Morgan County High School who played the past four seasons at Vanderbilt. He started 80 of 105 games played for the Commodores and recorded 1,006 points, 391 rebounds, 137 assists and 98 steals. Last season, Lawrence averaged 13.8 points per game overall and upped his production to a team-high 14.6 ppg in SEC action.

Leffew, a 6-4, graduate guard from Hampton, Ga., and Jonesboro High School, played at Mount St. Mary’s over the previous four seasons. He scored 1,137 points for the Mountaineers and was a first-team All-MAAC performer last season after averaging 17.6 points per game. Among Mount St. Mary’s career leaders, Leffew wrapped up his career at No. 32 in points, No. 10 in 3-pointers (176) and No. 9 in 3-point attempts (.491.

Here you can view the entire interviews with Lawrence and Leffew. Below are selected quotes from Monday’s interview session.

No. 7 Tyrin Lawrence | Grad. | Guard

On the excitement of getting closer to playing on the court together…

“We’re definitely looking forward to it. We’ve been here – I know, me and Dakota [Leffew] – since May, the other guys also. So to finally get a chance to go against someone else and to see what we’ve been working on and put it to the test.”

On how he envisions the team to look when they play together for the first time…

“I imagine it will look great. I know we’ve got great players ranking from top to bottom. We all bring a lot to the table, so hopefully we can put it all together and come out victorious.”

On what attracted him to Georgia…

“Mike White, he’s got a pretty good staff here. I got in the portal twice, so he’s been recruiting me for two cycles. I like the vision they have here in getting Georgia back on track, and I’m excited to be on board.”

On what he likes about this team and how they will stack up with the rest of the SEC…

“Just being around, I think we have all the components to be a good team in the SEC. I’ve seen all the Kentuckys and Arkansas out there. I think we have a lot of the stuff that I’ve seen prior in my experience at Vandy, ranging from shot blockers to shot makers. I think we’ve got it all.”

On the vision for him fitting into the backcourt…

“Coach White, the first thing he told me was I was going to have the opportunity to play in a lot of ball screens. I think any guard in the country would like that. And like you said about Silas [Demary Jr.] and Blue [Cain], he talked about those guys returning and having a great nucleus, and I’m just happy to be able to join them.”

On his impressions of Silas Demary Jr.

“Silas, the first thing that stands out is his leadership. Him being young, he still – I don’t want to say he’s an old head, but he thinks like an old head. But he’s a great leader. He’s always trying to make guys better, making sure they’re in the right spots and things like that.”

On what he has seen from Asa Newell and how well he will adapt to SEC play…

“Asa, he’s extremely talented. He can shoot, he can finish on the inside, defend on the perimeter and on the inside. So Asa brings a lot to the table. I didn’t know him before this, but I’m just glad to see – I don’t mean to sound disrespectful, but he’s not all hype. So whatever you heard about Asa is true.”

On his role as one of the older players on the team…

“Being around for a while, I would say my role is keeping everybody together, just letting them know there will be ups and downs. Don’t get too high or too low about anything. You know, just stay the course and everything will take care of itself.”

On his goals for this season and what he wants to accomplish in his first year at Georgia…

“I’m sure this is every team’s goal, every player’s goal, to play in the NCAA Tournament. I haven’t had a chance to do that yet. I’m looking forward to having that opportunity this year. Doing it at home is nothing short of special.”

No. 1 Dakota Leffew | Grad. | Guard

On the team’s chemistry heading into the season…

“Yeah, me and Tyrin [Lawrence] have been here since May. A couple guys are returning, also still been here. New faces. I feel like we’re gelling pretty well, things like that. We compete every day. Our day-to-day things to keep growing, taking each day at a time.”

On the biggest adjustment coming to Georgia…

“Pretty much the weight room. Coming in, I was pretty smaller than this. Taking the weight room more seriously and things like that. I feel like that was the biggest adjustment.”

On what he wants to learn from the team heading into the first exhibition…

“How we would do against adversity. We’ve been practicing things like that. You never know what would happen and how we would come back.”

On De’Shayne Montgomery influencing him to commit to Georgia…

“He was in my ear a lot. He stayed down the hall for me back at Mount St. Mary’s. When he did commit and he made the post and things like that, we pretty much talked about it and things like that. Why not do it again? Because it was in my final and it was in his final because he committed.”

On what else sold him on Georgia…

“Really the fit. I also know that they were losing a lot of pieces and things like that. It was good for me to come in.”

On what stood out from his experience playing at Stegeman Coliseum last season…

“Being back home for me. I’m from Georgia, being back home in the atmosphere in Stegman and things like that. But we did play them over break, but it was kind of packed.”

On what stands out from Tyrin Lawrence’s game…

“He’s a leader. This is my first year in the league, so I’m going to always ask him. I always ask Silas [Demary Jr.], Blue [Cain] and things like that. He’s been in this league. What he brings to the table is leadership. He’s downhill. He can score and things like that.”

On what his strengths are…

“Shooting, scoring, things like that. I want to be a two-way player and things like that.”
