VB: Georgia Travels West to Colorado for Buffs Classic

Georgia volleyball is back on the road this weekend, traveling west to Boulder, Colorado for the Buffs Classic. The Bulldogs will play host Colorado, Washington, and Fresno State at the CU Events Center.

Series Histories

Colorado

– Series tied 3-3.

– The Bulldogs are 1-1 against the Buffaloes in Boulder.

– Georgia and Colorado met in Boulder in 2018. Georgia won the meeting in four sets.

– Prior to the meeting in 2018, the Bulldogs and Buffs last met in 1998.

Washington

– Georgia trails the all-time series 1-2.

– The Bulldogs and Huskies have never met on a neutral court.

– Georgia and Washington last met in 2010 in Athens. Washington swept the Bulldogs in that match.

Fresno State

– First all-time meeting.

Recapping Action

Georgia opened the 2024 season at the Seminole Invitational last week in Tallahassee, Florida. The Bulldogs began the season with a five-set victory over UCSB. Newcomer Bianna Muoneke recorded a new career high 23 kills in the match. Georgia hit .350 en route to a sweep of South Florida on day two of the tournament, led by 15 kills from Sophie Fischer. The tournament ended with a four-set loss to No. 20 Florida State. Erykah Lovett, Muoneke, and Fischer all topped the double-digit kill mark in the match and Georgia put up 12 team blocks against the Seminoles. Clara Brower and Muoneke were named to the Seminole Invitational All-Tournament Team.

A Look at What’s Ahead

The Bulldogs will host the Classic City Clash next weekend at Stegeman Coliseum. Georgia welcomes Boston College, Jacksonville, and Utah Valley to Athens for the six-match round robin tournament. Georgia’s opens tournament play Friday, Sept. 13 against Boston College at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs play Jacksonville (10:30 a.m.) and Utah Valley (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday at Stegeman.

Muoneke Makes Mark in Georgia Debut

Sophomore outside hitter Bianna Muoneke made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs in her first matches in the Red and Black at the Seminole Invitational. She kicked off the season setting a career best with 23 kills against UCSB. She hit .438 in the match and recorded a double-double with 10 digs. She totaled 26 points against the Gauchos. Following a seven-kill, 10 dig performance in the sweep of USF, she finished the tournament with 13 kills and nine digs against No. 20 Florida State. She totaled 43 kills (3.58/set), 29 digs (2.42/set), five blocks, and two aces on opening weekend en route to all-tournament honors.

Georgia Receiving Votes in Sept. 2 AVCA Coaches’ Poll

Following week one of the 2024 season, Georgia is receiving votes in the latest AVCA/Taraflex Coaches’ Poll. The Bulldogs began the season ranked No. 25. It was Georgia’s first top-25 ranking since opening the 1996 season at No. 24.

Fischer Tabbed Preseason All-SEC

Graduate middle blocker Sophie Fischer was named to the 2024 Preseason All-SEC team. The reigning SEC Player of the Year finished last season as the nation’s highest-scoring middle blocker. She became the second Bulldog to be named the SEC Player of the Year and just the fifth Georgia player to garner AVCA All-America status.

Fischer Competes on International Stage in the offseason

Sophie Fischer competed with the U.S. Women’s National Team at the NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six in June. Team USA won the silver medal in Santo Domingo. She totaled nine points in the gold medal match.
