MGolf: UGA begins the 2023-24 season Saturday at the Valero Texas Collegiate in San Antonio

The University of Georgia men’s golf team will begin its 2023-24 season starting on Saturday at the Valero Texas Collegiate at the TPC San Antonio Oaks in San Antonio, Texas. The 12-team tournament, hosted by UTSA, features three 18-hole rounds running from Saturday, Sept. 9 and concluding on Monday, Sept. 11. 

The Bulldogs lineup will consist of graduates Beck Burnette, Connor Creasy and Ben van Wyk, senior Caleb Manuel and junior Buck Brumlow. Sophomore Carter Loflin will be competing as an individual. 

“The guys are excited to get the year started,” head coach Chris Haack said. “Being able to come to a first-class place like this that hosts a TOUR event certainly amps up the excitement, knowing the winner of the event will get to play in the TOUR event. We’re all thrilled to be here and showcase the work we’ve put in.”

The tournament marks the first of four fall tournaments for Georgia, who will participate in the SEC Match Play Championship at the Birmingham Country Club on Sept. 25-27. The Bulldogs will round out 2023 playing in the Ben Hogan Collegiate hosted by TCU on Oct. 2-3 and at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic hosted by Hawaii on Oct. 26-28.

The Course: The tournament will be held at TPC San Antonio Oaks Course, which hosts the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open. Opened in 2010, the course was designed by Greg Norman and consultant Sergio Garcia and plays at par 72 and a total yardage of 7,050.

The Inaugural Valero Texas Collegiate: The University of Texas at San Antonio will be hosting the first Valero Texas Collegiate at the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open site. The individual winner of the event will earn an exemption into the 2024 Valero Texas Open. 

Dawgs in the Polls: Georgia opens the season as the No. 20 team in the nation on the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs also have a trio of individuals in the PGA TOUR University Rankings, all within the top 50. Graduate van Wyk leads the team with a No. 32 ranking, fellow grad student Creasy checks in at No. 37 and senior Manuel rounds out the Dawgs in the rankings at No. 41. 

Georgia Returns Experienced Core: The Bulldogs bring back four golfers who led the team to the NCAA Championship and six total players from the 2022-23 roster. Georgia’s roster returns veteran experience in graduates Creasy and van Wyk, senior Manuel, juniors Brumlow, JT Herman, and sophomore Loflin. The 2023-24 Bulldogs features many proven talent, with graduate Burnette and senior George Langham joining the team as transfers. Freshman and Ponte Vedra, Fla., native Camden Smith rounds out the newcomers. 

Haack Enters 28th Season: Chris Haack was named the Georgia men’s golf coach on July 18, 1996 – and he has guided the Bulldogs to their highest levels of success. Coach Haack has coached the Bulldogs to two national championships (the only two in school history), eight Southeastern Conference crowns, 68 team tournament titles, and virtually every squad and individual record.

During his 27 previous seasons leading the program, the Bulldogs have advanced out of the NCAA Regional round and into the championships 23 times. Haack has also guided the team to at least one tournament win as the head coach in 23 of the 27 seasons.

MBB: Anthony Edwards posted a team-high 23 points and eight rebounds in the USA National Team’s 113-111 loss to Germany

The USA will face Canada in the tournament’s Bronze Medal matchup at 4:40 a.m. ET on Sunday morning on ESPN2.

Edwards scored 15 first-half points to help give the USA a 50-49 lead at the intermission. Germany used a 35-point third quarter to build an 84-74 edge and then withstood several rallies attempts by the Americans in the final period.

Edwards scored six points in a 9-0 surge, capped by his 3-pointer that pulled the USA within 106-103 at the 3:17 mark. The Americans closed the gap to 108-107 with 1:35 remaining before Germany scored five unanswered points to go up 113-107 with 40 seconds on the clock.

Edwards scored 23 points while connecting on 10-of-17 shots from the field and 1-of-2 trips to the line. He recorded a game-high eight boards, all on the defensive end, and also notched three assists, one steal and one block in a game-high 34 minutes of playing time.

Over seven World Cup games, Edwards is the USA’s leading scorer at 18.1 points per game and second-leading rebounder at 4.6 boards per contest. He is shooting 48.0 percent from the field and contributing 2.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Edwards was the top-scoring freshman in the nation in his one season at Georgia, averaging 19.1 points per game en route to earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. He scored 610 points for the Bulldogs, the 10th-most ever by an SEC freshman and the seventh-most by any Georgia player in a single season.

The Atlanta native was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and has emerged as one of the league’s most dynamic young players with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Edwards has scored 4,871 points in three seasons with the Timberwolves, the fourth-most in NBA history for a player before his 22nd birthday behind only LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony. He led the franchise to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023 and was named an NBA All-Star in 2023.
