WTennis: Six Bulldogs set to represent the UGA at the ITA All-American Championships

 Six Bulldogs are set to represent the Georgia women’s tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships starting on Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. 

“We have got a couple tournaments under our belt now and are excited to continue testing ourselves against the top competition in the country,” said head coach Drake Bernstein. “All of our players have some specifics they are working on whether it be mentally or physically and there is no better tournament to challenge us than the All-American Championships.” 

The squad consisting of juniors Dasha Vidmanova, Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant, sophomore Anastasiia Lopata and freshmen Gracie Epps and Aysegul Mert will start off in different stages of the competition for both singles and doubles.  

In singles play, Grant, Mert, Epps and Nirundorn will all begin in the pre-qualifying draw starting on Saturday. Lopata will open once play reaches the qualifying draw round on Monday, Oct. 2 while Vidmanova begins in the main draw starting Thursday, Oct. 5. 

On the doubles side, the tandem of Mert and Vidmanova will take the court in the qualifying draw while the duo of Nirundorn and Grant open up in the main draw. 

“We will look to bring a competitive energy and togetherness tomorrow to start this long tournament off on the right foot,” said Bernstein.

MTennis: UGA recorded a 7-1 record in singles and tallied five doubles victories Friday to begin the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Championships

The University of Georgia men’s tennis team recorded a 7-1 record in singles and tallied five doubles victories Friday to begin the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. 

“We had a very productive day,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “We could have played better doubles, especially in the first round. We raised our game in the second round, as we are still trying some different combinations. We had a good day in singles. Many of our freshmen had to deal with some nerves early in their singles matches, but we did a great job playing through that in most cases. I am looking for improvements from all our guys tomorrow.”

Georgia’s tandem of Ryan Colby and Niels Ratiu landed in the finals of the red doubles draw with a pair of wins, taking down Charlotte’s Coy Simon and Brett Glorida, 8-2, before ousting UNCW’s Reece Falck and Jonathan Baron, 8-7 (4). Colby and Ratiu will face Clemson’s Noa Vukadin and Maxwell Smith in Sunday’s doubles finals. 

Parker Jacques and Thomas Paulsell looked strong on the doubles courts with an 8-5 win against Vanderbilt’s Mitchell Deames and Paul Wang. Jacques then teamed with fellow freshman Davis Taylor for an 8-7 (5) win against their Georgia Tech counterparts Robert Bauer and Owen DeMuth. 

The Bulldogs were outstanding on the singles courts, with seven wins. Ratiu, Miguel Perez Peña, Paulsell and Colby all advanced to the quarterfinals of the red draw, while Cyrus Mahjoob, and Davis Taylor advanced to the quarterfinals of the black flight. 

For Taylor and Ratiu, it marks the first victories of their young Bulldog careers. Freshman teammate Parker Mariencheck recorded his second win of the season in a three-set battle against UNCW’s Andrew Broadsteer. 

Action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with two rounds of singles.

UGAAA teams with Hilinski’s Hope for its 2023 Student-Athlete Mental Health Week

The goal of this week is to raise awareness about the mental health resources available to students and student-athletes. Among the numerous initiatives, Georgia football players will wear green ribbon decals on their helmets during next Saturday’s home game against Kentucky. Student-athletes and staff of various Bulldog athletic programs will wear ‘Mental Health Matters’ t-shirts at events throughout the week. 

“At UGA Athletics, we believe student-athletes are more than their sport, and we value all aspects of their identity,” said Dr. Dylan Firsick, UGA’s Assistant Athletic Director of Mental Health and Performance. “I am proud of the work our Mental Health and Performance team is doing in supporting the overall wellness of each student-athlete, both in and out of their sport. Education and awareness are critical in connecting student-athletes to mental health resources and no organization is doing more to promote athlete mental health than Hilinski’s Hope. We are proud to partner with Hilinski’s Hope and encourage all athletic departments to do the same for the 2023 Student Athlete Mental Health Week.”

Created in memory of Tyler Hilinski, who died by suicide in 2018, Hilinski’s Hope is a national organization promoting mental health support and suicide prevention for student-athletes. The University of Georgia Athletic Association is one of 154 athletic departments nationwide to promote the initiative this year.
