Georgia’s Davis Thompson has earned entry into the 120th U.S. Open Championship, according to an announcement Wednesday by the United States Golf Association.

The U.S. Open will be hosted by Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, Sept. 17-20, 2020.

Thompson, a native of Auburn, Ala., was added to the field based on his World Amateur Golf Ranking of No. 4. He was joined by No. 1 Takumi Kanaya of Japan; No. 2 Ricky Castillo of California; No. 3 Chun An Yu of Chinese Taipei; No. 5 Eduard Rousaud of Spain; No. 6 Sandy Scott of Scotland; and No. 7 John Pak of New Jersey.

“I’m excited to play in what’s considered golf’s greatest test,” Thompson said. “I’m anxious to see what I can do playing against the best in the world, and I’m just going to try and prepare to the best of my ability. I knew this was a possibility going into the summer. I worked hard and kept praying for the opportunity.”

Georgia alums Kevin Kisner, Brendon Todd, and Bubba Watson earlier earned spots in the field.

Thompson, a junior from Auburn, Ala., was a 2020 First-Team All-American and First-Team All-SEC pick and he was named to the All-Southeast Region Team. He was chosen for the United States’ Arnold Palmer Cup Team and he was a finalist for the Haskins and the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year awards. Thompson won the Jim Rivers Invitational for the second victory of his career and led the Bulldogs to the team title. He recorded four additional top-10 finishes. Thompson wound up with a scoring average of 69.95, including 9-of-21 rounds in the 60s. He appeared in two PGA Tour events, the RSM Classic and the Puerto Rico Open, and recently made the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur. Thompson was a 2020 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and was named to the Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll.
