Dawg Bones: Georgia vs. Georgia Tech

Justin Fields (1)

OFFENSE DAWG BONE: TIE
These two teams tie for the offensive Dawg Bone. First, Georgia Tech is a powerhouse triple-option team that rarely throws the ball. The Yellow Jackets average 353.7 yards on the ground and 83.7 passing yards. Quarterback TaQuon Marshall, Tobias Oliver, and Jordan Mason are the three guys to keep an eye out for on Georgia Tech’s team. Marshall is a quarterback that can hurt teams and make them pay with his ability to make plays with his feet. He leads Tech in rushing with 174 carries for 857 yards and 11 touchdowns.

As for Georgia, it’s simple, run the damn ball. The Bulldogs average 257.5 yards on the ground and rank first in the SEC in rushing. Justin Fields showed out last week gaining 100 yards on the ground and showed how having two five-star quarterbacks is a good problem to have. Fields will likely see a good bit of the field this week as he can use his legs as well as some of the running backs. Georgia needs to run the ball until it doesn’t work. After rushing for well over 400 yards last week and having 300+ yards on the ground for the third week in a row, the Bulldogs will likely stick to that plan. D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield could each end up with another 100-yard game.

DEFENSE DAWG BONE: GEORGIA

Georgia gets the defense Dawg Bone because the group seems to be finally hitting its stride. The young guys behind the starters are coming along and starting to make plays. Georgia Tech’s triple-option is hard to contain for any defense. The Bulldogs need to play to their assignments and not do anything fancy. They must find a way to slow down the Yellow Jackets high powered run game. Jordan Davis, Jonathan Ledbetter, Tyler Clark, and company need to have their best game so far this season and show them who runs this state. Not to mention, the linebackers need to be ready to pop anyone on the edges and try and avoid those long runs.

SPECIAL TEAMS DAWG: GEORGIA

Rodrigo Blankenship’s ability to put teams deep in their territories will be significant this week. He has 69 touchbacks on the season on 81 kickoffs. A longer field for an offense isn’t always the most sought-after thing, so having a kicker that consistently put teams that deep is something most coaches want.

COACHING DAWG BONE: GEORGIA

Georgia Tech is one of the only schools Kirby Smart doesn’t have a winning record against. Smart has all the tangibles he needs to defeat the Yellow Jackets. He knows what to tell his guys to fire them up and send out the seniors with a win against the Yellow Jackets.

OVERALL DAWG BONE: GEORGIA

For the second straight year, the Bulldogs head into the Georgia Tech game 10-1. The last time Georgia Tech played in Athens, it won 28-27. Georgia has unfinished business to handle against the Yellow Jackets, and there isn’t a mercy rule. It will be a tough game for the defense, but the amount of depth Georgia has will overpower Georgia Tech as a whole.
