I think everyone is still coming down from the high that was Georgia’s offensive performance– more specifically their passing game– last Saturday against Kentucky. In case you missed it, Carson Beck, with the help of “ten good friends” (per Coach Smart), threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns all while completing 80% of his throws. 

Given what’s appeared to be a sluggish start to the season on the offensive side of the ball, Beck’s performance last Saturday has been almost earth-shattering for fans who’ve been dying to see him just straight up sling it. The stats have been burned into the minds of all Dawg fans over the last 72 hours or so because these are the kind of numbers they’ve been waiting for. The kind of numbers they’ve been expecting from a quarterback who’s playing for a team that’s defending back-to-back national championships. 

Through six weeks of ball UGA’s QB1 is fourth in the nation in passing yards with 1,886, and he’s slowly but surely climbing the Heisman watchlist rankings. And thankfully enough, none of it’s going to his head. He gives a “huge credit to [his] offensive line” and the rest of his teammates saying:

“Football’s a team game. It’s not about me. My success is hugely reliant on the players that I have around me.”

It may be too soon to say, but it feels like things are really falling into place with this team. The guys are getting comfortable, and Beck spoke to that saying “obviously the confidence” has improved since his first career start against UT Martin, but on top of that he emphasized that he’s felt progression in “every area” of the game. 

After almost four years of sitting on the bench, he’s had to grow used to being on the field and, “trying to learn how to play football again,” he says and now we’re seeing it being proven on the field. 

And the fact of the matter is, momentum and expectations heading into Vandy may have to be checked strictly based on the weather conditions of the game. It’s looking like it’s going to be in the 40s and rainy, so the team is already prepping for less than favorable conditions, but there’s only so much you can do in practice to replicate the reality of the game.

Hopefully a little cold and some slight downpour won’t be anything that can put down Dawgs as they start to heat up and take on midseason form. Expect Beck and company to remain cool, calm, and collected as they hit the road to take on a sneaky athletic quarterback in Ken Seals, some speedy receivers, and the rest of the Vanderbilt Commodores this Saturday in Nashville.
