It’s always busy here in the Classic City. In the world of athletics, them Dawgs are constantly representing the G on the gridiron, diamond and hardwood; or on the vault, beam, bars and floor, those GymDogs are radiating with red and black pride; all the way to the tee box, fairway and greens, the Dawgs on Tour consistently exhibit the University of Georgia’s impact beyond this beautiful campus. We’re here to update you on all the Georgia happenings following another weekend of action in the latest edition of our Dawgs Report Card!
Dawgs in the NFL
With the Chiefs and 49ers reaching the Super Bowl for a clash of two NFL powerhouses, five Dawgs will take the field for a chance to hoist the coveted Lombardi Trophy: Mecole Hardman and Malik Herring for Kansas City and Charlie Woerner, Chris Conley and Robert Beal Jr. for San Francisco. Unfortunately, not every Dawg from Championship Weekend will be in Las Vegas for the Super Bowl as the Ravens fell to the Chiefs in an all-time battle. Baltimore Bulldogs Roquan Smith, Nick Moore and Ben Cleveland all capped off great seasons, and the Georgia faithful are all here to continue supporting them in the many good years they will have in the NFL! Good luck to the five that do have a shot at the Super Bowl; may the best man win, but for Georgia fans, we cannot lose as a former Dawg is guaranteed a ring!
Men’s Basketball
The Hoop Dawgs took a tough loss on Saturday to the Gators from Gainesville. As our valiant leader Mike White traveled to the school he formerly called home, Georgia was riding a thrilling, last-second win over LSU. However, the Dawgs showed up flat in the first half and beginning of the second half. That was until RJ Melendez caught fire! Fighting back from a largest deficit of 21 points, Melendez and the men wearing the red and black came all the way back and forced overtime. After being outscored 17-13 in OT, Georgia fell to the Gators 102-98.
Despite the loss, positives can be taken from Georgia’s away loss. First, how ‘bout Melendez: a career high for the junior guard. Melendez came off the bench alongside Blue Cain and Justin Hill. The three would combine for 61 points. If the Dawgs can get a few more starters in double digit scoring paired with a deep bench, Georgia could be dangerous as we get closer to March. The Dawgs are still projected to be one of the “first four out” come tournament season. Furthermore, with a stacked SEC schedule with the opportunity to take down some ranked opponents in the coming weeks, this Georgia team can find a way to sneak in the dance.
Next up: Georgia (14-6 overall, 4-3 in the SEC) hosts No. 24 Alabama on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
The Lady Dogs took their sixth straight loss after falling to Auburn 67-49 in Neville Arena. Coach ABE and her squad have a lot to figure out as their brutal SEC schedule continues. For the Lady Dogs, they host arch-nemesis Tennessee on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a chance to end their losing streak against the Lady Vols. Georgia is now 10-10 on the year and 1-6 in the SEC.
GymDogs
No. 21 Georgia traveled to Lexington on Friday for a matchup with the No. 3 Wildcats. The GymDogs fell to Kentucky 197.950-195.650. The GymDogs are now 1-3 on the year and 0-3 in conference play. Despite the loss, four of the top 15 teams face off with Georgia over the next month, three of which travel to Athens. Those GymDogs need the support the Dawg Nation always gives them. Rock the Steg for your ladies wearing the red and black!
Men’s Tennis
In the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Georgia traveled to Clemson to take on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. Head Coach Manny Diaz and his squad returned home victorious after sweeping Louisiana 4-0. Junior No. 41 Thomas Paulsell claimed his third match-clinching win on court one. After a quick travel back, Georgia took on No. 18 Texas A&M at home on Monday. The Dawgs fell 2-4.
Next up: Georgia (3-1) heads right down I-85 to take on the enemy Yellow Jacket in Atlanta on February 6th at 2 p.m.
