Georgia track and field tallied four victories to highlight the first day of the Georgia Relays at the Spec Towns Track on Friday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The meet continues with the women’s javelin and women’s 3000-meter steeplechase at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The men’s 4×400 relay is the final event scheduled on the Georgia Relays’ second day at 3:15 p.m.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “This was a good start to the season for our hammer throwers especially and also in the javelin,” said Bulldog head coach Wayne Norton. “We accomplished what we needed to. We’ve made it through day one which is a good thing.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Sophomore Alex Poursanidis opened with what would have been a winning throw of 217 feet, 2 inches. His second throw measured 219-10, which ended as his top mark and was the fourth-best meet of his Bulldog career.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Fellow sophomore Alex Larsson fit a personal-best toss of 215-4 between four fouls in his series to earn runner-up honors. His previous career best of 214-9 came at this same facility during the 2014 Spec Towns Invitational.
[su_spacer size=”20″] [su_spacer size=”20″] Junior transfer Shelby Ashe had a second throw of 202-8 in the women’s hammer to win the meet and earn a spot in the school record books during her first collegiate competition at the UGA track. Ashe moved to sixth on the Lady Bulldog all-time top-10 list with her performance, bumping sophomore Asianna Covington down to No. 7 on the list.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Covington finished second on Friday with a second throw that measured 188-9. This was her second-best outing of her young Georgia career.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Senior Nick Vena and junior Ashinia Miller went 1-2 out of the collegiate shot put competition in their first outing since the NCAA Indoor Championships. Vena, who had four long-distance fouls in the competition, had a fourth throw of 63-4 for top honors. Miller worked up to a fifth throw of 61-11.50 to finish second against the collegiate competitors and third overall.
[su_spacer size=”20″] [su_spacer size=”20″] Former Bulldog SEC champion and All-American Reese Hoffa, who was a bronze medalist at the 2012 Olympics, opened his outdoor season and won the shot put with the world’s fifth-best throw this year (67-4).
[su_spacer size=”40″] Junior Braydon Anderson made a six-foot improvement from his 2014 opener to win the javelin. Anderson bounced back from an opening foul to reach 207-1 to pick up his first victory of the year.
[su_spacer size=”20″] [su_spacer size=”20″] In the women’s shot put, freshman Anna Machovec opened with a throw of 43-11.75 and returned with a mark of 44-5.50 on her sixth and final throw for third place.
