Ok. It’s clear that you guys like video clips more than charts. Well, with the help of Clark Brooks and his site SEC Stat Cat -I’m going relive the ND game with my video clips and his “offensive scripts.”
Clark tracks a lot of what I track with you guys, but does it for the entire SEC. Please enjoy my stuff here, but visit him and follow on Twitter. Many of you probably follow him already. He’s given me permission to highlight and use his work here.
The Notre Dame game was highlighted early and often in the pre-season. CBS chose it over the LSU-Alabama game for its annual primetime slot – and it drew high ratings. But, as exciting and electric as the atmosphere was – the offense showed a conservative approach and fairly pedestrian metrics
Let’s get right into the first Drive. I’m missing the first two plays, but Fromm completed two passes to D. Rob for 12 yards and first down.
UGA’s second Drive. 6 Plays. Simmons gains 18 yards on a rush and a reception.
UGA scores a TD on it’s third possession. Has to be one of the best drives of the season. 8 runs with 5 Successful Plays. Both TE’s involved. And Swift punches it in for the score.
UGA’s 4th Offensive Drive. 7 plays with a -7 end around run with Landers on 1st and 10 that put the offense behind the sticks and off schedule.
UGA’s final drive of 1st Half. 3 Plays. 14 Yards and a FG. Sorry don’t add kicks to my database. Will next year.
Dawgs only have 4 drives in second half. But Hot Rod puts three more on the board. Herrien gets us going with a 16 yard… wait for it… an inside zone read run. It worked… good times
Dawgs seventh drive. Cager TD. Trio of Cager, Swift, and Pickens that lit up Sanford with this touchdown, when healthy, could’ve…. sigh…
The 8th drive ended in somewhat of a controversial play call. Coach Smart electing to attempt a long (and successful FG) over trying to convert on 4th and short. Getting the first down runs more clock and potentially ices the game. But, Dawgs go the 3 points.
UGA’s last drive was perplexing. The third-down was scary on the mishandles snap on the “all vert” play. But, as much as I like trying to get the ball to Pickens… I would have like to have seen it called earlier in the series. Run clock or challenge downfield when they are expecting you to run down the clock. Dawgs win after DJ Daniel BATS THE BALL DOWN on ND’s last-ditch pass.
