Demetris Robertson had a breakout game in the season opener against Vanderbilt on Saturday night. Robertson didn’t have a catch during the entire 2018 season, and he admitted in post-game player interviews that it felt good to finally have a few under his belt.

“The first catch of my career at Georgia was a touchdown and it felt really good. I practice catching touchdown passes all the time.”

Quarterback Jake Fromm connected with Robertson across the back of the end zone in the first quarter. Fromm delivered a nicely placed ball and Robertson hauled it in easily.

Robertson seemed to be the go-to guy in the first half for Fromm. Robertson finished the game with the most receptions of all the Georgia receivers and had 23 yards receiving. He also rushed the ball two times for 29 yards.

Robertson, who is a 6-foot-0, 190-pound wideout is a transfer from Cal. He was granted immediate eligibility but didn’t play that much of an impact in his first year at Georgia in 2018. But on Saturday night offensive coordinator James Coley had dialed up a couple of plays that involved Robertson, and the junior made sure to make his reps count.

One thing that separates Robertson from others is his pure speed. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart added that Robertson adds a lot of value to the team and that his hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

“D-Rob’s been busting his tail, he got an opportunity to make some plays,” Smart said. “I thought he was very comfortable. He was dominant on special teams as gunner holdup, which he gets no credit for. He and Matt Landers had a dominant of performance as you’ve ever had out there. He goes as kind of an unsung hero.”

Robertson said he will enjoy the first win, but Monday the team needs to go back to the drawing board and get better at some things. He also added that getting a year under his belt and really learning the offense helped him in the long run. Learning from guys like former wideouts Mecole Hardman, Riley Ridley and Terry Godwin helped.

“I’m more focused, more dialed in,” Robertson said. “I’m in good health [and] good spirits.”

Smart also mentioned that he didn’t think that there was a difference between Robertson last year and this year. Smart said he just has more opportunities this year than he did in 2018.

Robertson said that he believes in Georgia’s receiving core and that their time will come next week.

“We have a great group of guys,” Robertson said. “A lot of guys didn’t go off this game, but I’m sure the next game will be a crazy game.”
