EQUESTRIAN: No. 1 UGA defeats No. 5 Fresno State

[su_spacer size=”20″] The No. 1 Georgia equestrian team battled back in the final event to defeat No. 5 Fresno State 12-8 on Friday afternoon in Delaware.  The neutral-site meet was held indoors at the Delaware State Fair Grounds and hosted by the Delaware State equestrian team.  With the win, Georgia improves to 2-0 on the season.  Meg O’Mara received MOP honors in Equitation Over Fences.

 

“Today is not exactly what we had planned or wanted to do”, head coach Meghan Boenig said.  “There were some things that plagued us that we will work on for our next meet.  However, it was a great way to end competition.  It’s good to have pressure early on in the season and essentially rising to that.  I’m proud of our girls.  The field gets harder and harder and we have to continue to step up.”

 

Fresno State jumped to an early 3-2 lead in Horsemanship.  Fresno State picked up the first two points before Heather Schmidt and Bailey Anderson earned two points for Georgia.  Fresno State won the final point of the event.

 

Equitation on the Flat was up next with Georgia winning the event 3-2.  Fresno State earned the first point before Georgia’s Leylan Gleeson defeated Fresno State’s Alex Diriskon 79-78.  Georgia took the next two points with Liza Finsness and Addy Cord defeating their opponents 71-69 and 73-72, respectively.  Fresno State grabbed the final point of the event.

 

In Reining, Fresno State outscored Georgia 3-2.  Fresno State earned the first point before Kyndall Harper earned a point for Georgia.  Claudia Spreng won Georgia’s final point of the event with a score of 67.5.  Fresno State grabbed the next two points.  Fresno State led Georgia 8-7 going into Equitation Over Fences.

 

Georgia battled back in Equitation Over Fences winning the event 5-0.  Leylan Gleeson and Ali Haupt each won their points to tie up the competition before Liza Finsness earned the go-ahead point for Georgia.  Addy Cord and Meg O’Mara brought it home, taking the final two points of the competition.  Meg O’Mara’s score of 84 in Equitation Over Fences earned her MOP honors.

 

The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs 12-8.

 

“I want to thank Delaware State for hosting this neutral meet and making accommodations for the weather.  It was incredible,” Boenig said.

 

Georgia will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Delaware State at the Delaware State Fair Grounds in Harrington, Del.  The meet is scheduled to start immediately following competition between Fresno State and Delaware State.  Live scoring updates will be available by following @UGAEquestrian on Twitter.
