Georgia received some good news on Friday afternoon when one the Bulldogs top signees for the 2018 recruiting class, Justin Fields, posted on Twitter that he was enrolling early at UGA.

But just 48-hours earlier on Wednesday, the talented five-star dual-threat quarterback out of Harrison High School was still unsure on whether or not he would enroll early according to the AJC DawgNation’s Jeff Sentell.

So why the hold-up?

Baseball. Fields was weighing the decision to stay Harrison through the spring and play his last season of varsity high school baseball as well as the potential of being drafted by a Major League Baseball team in the upcoming MLB draft.

The benefit of Fields enrolling early is that he will be able to participate in spring football practices and the spring football game for UGA, where he will compete against incumbent starting quarterback, Jake Fromm, and current backup Jacob Eason; although, it is quite possible Eason could decide to transfer. That makes Fields’ decision to enroll early even more important as if Eason does decide to transfer, that would have left the Bulldogs with just one quarterback on scholarship headed into the spring.

The 6 foot 3 and 221 lbs Justin Fields committed to Georgia on Oct. 6th and signed with the Bulldogs during the new early signing period on Dec. 20th. He is rated a consensus five-star prospect by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals and is considered the top dual-threat quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class.
