Spring Football Practice Observations – Opening Day

I spent half of the media period taking photos, so my actual observation time was fairly short. In fact, there was a mix up with the media period and we were limited to about 1/2 the time originally allotted. Instead of trying to cover the entire 200-yard practice area, I limited myself to a few position groups.

Quarterbacks:

The new guy on the block is freshman D’wan Mathis (2). Mathis, in some ways, reminds me of Jacob Eason, but might just be that he is taller than the other QBs. He does have a very quick release, and he releases the ball high in his motion. Watching his facial expressions through my telephoto lens, I thought it was clear that he was feeling his way through the first day.

Stetson Bennett looks confident and in control of the drills and his game. He is a competitor who came back to UGA to win playing time and he has started on that path. He looks determined.

Offensive Line:

From left to right the number one unit on Monday was Andrew Thomas (T),
Solomon Kindley (G), Trey Hill (C), Ben Cleveland (G) and Isaiah Wilson (T). One should take these unit designations with a grain of salt, however, Remember, what we see are drill rotations rather than a unit actually running plays. So, the players listed are my best guess based on where they lined up for various drills.

Freshman Clay Webb (60) struck me as smaller than I remembered from seeing him at a camp last year, but that was probably due to the size of the other UGA linemen compared to the high school guys he was going against at that time.

Defensive Line:

Georgia’s extremely thin defensive line group was working on some pretty technical footwork drills under Coach Tray Scott. Scott is a detail-oriented coach who always makes the player get the drill right before moving on.

Two players that I paid particular attention to were Neotri Johnson and Jordan Davis. Johnson, of course, moved from the offensive line last season. Davis, a rising sophomore, burst onto the season in 2018 until he was slowed with a back injury late in the year. Both Johnson and Davis were full-go in Tuesday drills and both appear to have some bad weight that will need to be shed going forward.
