Oh what a night it was this past Saturday as our men in red and black absolutely throttled Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks. And what was most impressive was how the team continued to be relentless until the clock struck 0:00.
[su_spacer size=”20″]
While the victory had to be momentous for our players and coaches, I would argue that is it was even bigger for the fans in the Bulldog Nation. There’s no reason to go into all the details of the fun Spurrier has had beating our Dawgs over the last quarter century because we have all lived it. However, I will mention the fact that as a student at UGA, I was a perfect 0-5 to the Ole’ Ball Coach. So to say hanging 52 points on Spurrier was an absolute thing of beauty would be an understatement. And I have no problem admitting that had the kickoff recovery for a touchdown not been called back, I was already calling for Coach Richt to go for two to put 60 points on the scoreboard.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Unfortunately that wasn’t meant to be, which is probably a good thing because the 52 points was more poetic justice from when Spurrier joyfully did the same thing the one time the Gators came to Athens back in 1995. Like I said at the beginning … oh what a night!
[su_spacer size=”40″] As good as the win was, now our team and fan base must come down from the emotional high and be ready for Saturday’s game versus Southern University. This is definitely one of those games, where the competition isn’t anywhere near the caliber of Georgia, but as we’ve discussed before in this space there’s no longer gimmes in college football. And more importantly, the game versus the Jaguars represents another opportunity for our team to improve in all facets. This will be vital because the mighty Crimson Tide will arrive to town on October 3 trying to avoid a second loss, which would all but end their National Championship aspirations.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Since the passion of Sanford Stadium was at an all-time high against South Carolina, we decided it made sense to pay tribute to our fanbase by giving a few members of the Spike Squad this issue’s cover. Surely by now all of you have seen this awesome crew of Bulldawg backers over the years. The attention to details for each of their get-ups is marvelous. And they go absolutely bonkers throughout every Georgia game.
[su_spacer size=”40″] You will notice on the cover that we have the Spike Squad welcoming the Human Jukebox, which is the ultra talented band of Southern University. My suggestion to you is that you plan your concession and bathroom breaks accordingly to insure you are in your seat at halftime for what promises to be an awesome performance.
[su_spacer size=”40″] To learn more about the Human Jukebox, don’t miss our junior journalist, Hamilton Culpepper’s excellent column on page 12. Hammy also caught up with Athens residents Terry Wingfield and Vickie Farmer to get their remembrances about when the godfather of soul, James Brown brought down the house at Sanford Stadium during the 70s.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The entertainment on Saturday is sure to be a treat, now we just need our team and fanbase to continue the positive momentum and get another W for ole’ Georgia.
[su_spacer size=”40″] I hope you will enjoy this issue of Bulldawg Illustrated and please don’t miss Jeff Dantzler’s Top 25 on page 19. I purposely haven’t mentioned his Top 25 before now because he was being so tough on the Dawgs after the first two games. I think he had us number 17 one week and then down to 21 last week. This week he has the Dawgs at number 8, so even he’s beginning to give Richt and company some love.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Before I wrap this issue up, I must give huge props to Greyson Lambert for his record-breaking performance against the Gamecocks. I happened to run into Coach Dooley in the fourth quarter of the game and we both chuckled about how the masses were so down on #11 during and after the Vandy game. I think it’s safe to say he’s made believers out of everyone now.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Of course, Lambert’s big night would not have occurred without excel lent play from everyone around him. The offensive line was flawless all night long and the Georgia receiver’s were crisp with every route. And Bryan Schottenheimer certainly had his coming out party as the offensive coordinator. He called a near perfect game to the delight of all of us. Props to you coach!
[su_spacer size=”40″] And once again, the combination of Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall just keeps on keeping on. These guys are excellent and just an absolute blast to watch whenever they get the ball.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Of course, I must also hand out some game balls to the Georgia defense, which continues its opportunistic ways. In my opinion, Dominick Sanders has the best ball skills at safety of any Georgia player since Sean Jones. And that’s saying something because it was Jones who single-handedly kept the Bulldogs in the game in the famous 2002 victory at Auburn.
[su_spacer size=”40″] What’s so impressive about the Georgia D is the tenacity that they are attacking with on every play. And boy, doesn’t that make the Sanford crowd get rabid? Let’s keep it rolling on Saturday with the play on the field and the special treat of seeing the Human Jukebox do their thing at halftime. See you at high noon in Sanford for another Saturday in Athens!
