As I sit down to knock out this issue’s editor’s note, the time change has the sun dipping into the marsh at 5:30 p.m. on St. Simons Island. While I hope there wasn’t any property destroyed in the Golden Isles last evening, I’m sure there probably was because there was a ton of pent up angst for both our team and its incredible fan base. And handling Florida from the opening whistle provided exactly what everyone needed.
However, give the Gators credit, they kept fighting to the end, but when the final whistle blew … Georgia 24 Florida 17.
My goodness, I love beating Florida!
As you can tell by our awesome cover photo from BI photographer Rob Saye, the victory was shared mutually between our players and fans. The smile/roar on the face of Jake Fromm and the Georgia students is beautiful. However as you can tell by the equally stellar photo on this page by BI’s Bob Miller, the victory was earned because of the laser-like focus that Lawrence Cager arrived with when he hit the field on Saturday in Jacksonville. Yes, this photo was taken during pregame. Cager’s eyes say it all. And once play began, the Gators couldn’t stop his possessed attitude and grit. Naturally, Cager’s teammates followed suit. Each doing their job for the four quarters that it took to secure the victory.
From Jake Fromm carving up the Florida defense to the offensive line giving him the time to do so, the win was a thing of beauty. And the Georgia defense once again, flexed its muscles putting the entire nation on notice to look out for the Bulldogs during the month of November.
But back to this photo of Lawrence Cager …
The determination on his face is what everyone on the Georgia team and yes the Georgia fan base must have each week over the next month. That starts on Saturday night in Athens against the Missouri Tigers, who are seeking to rekindle their season after a recent slump.
One game at a time folks … there is zero margin for error … keep the roar!
I hope you enjoy this issue of BI. Like every year for Georgia-Florida, the scene in the Golden Isles was magical as our fans let the good times roll, be it on the golf course, on the beach, shopping at stores or eating at restaurants. Then on Saturday, buses, and cars headed south on I-95 in droves to Jacksonville to join all the other fans on the St. Johns River for what truly is the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. I hope our fan photos in this issue do a good job of catching the hoopla that makes this annual tradition so cool.
And in reference to Loran Smith’s column last week (in Bulldawg Illustrated) about Pat Dye saying our fans go to the game for the vacation and Florida goes to win to the game, how does three wins in a row sound Coach?
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
I’ll bid you farewell for now, but please enjoy this issue of BI. Again, the goal is simple Georgia fans … keep the roar going because the Missouri Tigers, arrive to Sanford Stadium on Saturday. I’ll see you there. Go Dawgs!!
