Another victorious weekend in Athens. The Bulldogs keep the home winning-streak alive. This past weekend’s 48-3 win makes it 26 straight at-home wins and 13 straight home opening wins. Unsurprisingly, the starting offensive and defensive linemen were elite. In addition, eight defensive Dawgs had tackles for losses including three sacks on the day. With a matchup against an FCS opponent in Tennessee Tech, Coach Smart was able to put the younger and inexperienced Dawgs in the game to help develop the future of Georgia football. At one point, Bulldog Nation witnessed a nearly entirely freshman defensive line, along with depth all the way down to the fourth team defensive players. Along on the train of freshmen playing, just about every offensive position other than quarterback saw a new face.
Carson Beck slung the rock until Gunner Stockton replaced him after his second drive in the third quarter. Beck hit five different players for touchdowns. Georgia’s first offensive play of the day was a 22 yard pass to Dillon Bell in the left side of the endzone. Although it was his only catch of the afternoon, Colbie Young remained a red zone threat with a six-yard touchdown over the middle. Carson Beck, in his postgame interview, mentioned that he changed Young’s route before the snap but that Young stuck with the initial route. It worked. To cap off the first half, Carson Beck made a throw to Dominic Lovett for his TD catch of the season with a toe-drag on the right side of the goal line. Arian Smith opened up the second half blazing past the Tennessee Tech defense for a fifty yard receiving TD. Beck’s final pass was to sophomore tight end Lawson Luckie down the left side of the field for a 37 yard TD. Eventually, both teams agreed to shorten the fourth quarter, making it just 10 minutes long. The Golden Eagles called a timeout with two seconds left and kicked a 32 yard field goal to get rid of their goose egg on the scoreboard.
The Dawgs have their SEC opener on the road next weekend in Lexington, Kentucky. The Wildcats are coming off their first loss in a matchup in which they were favored against South Carolina. Former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff and linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson headline the Wildcats offense and defense attacks, as both players will be facing their old teams for the first time. This is the first time that the Bulldogs have traveled to the Bluegrass State in September since 1942, meaning that this historically low-scoring, defensive slugfest will be the first of many challenges for Smart’s Bulldogs. Kirby Smart, in the Tennessee Tech postgame interview, mentioned the match against Kentucky always being a tough one, saying, “I don’t think we’ve been up there that it wasn’t just a battle.” From our perspective, Kentucky looked anything but impressive in last week’s blowout loss at home against South Carolina, and even though the team will not look past Kentucky for a second, it seems as though this coming Saturday evening has the potential to get out of hand.
Hot take of the week:
Last week’s hot take was not as successful as the first. KJ Bolden played most of the game, while Ellis Robinson IV had his own fair share of reps. Bolden made his first collegiate career sack, but neither player had any sort of turnover. This week, in Georgia’s first conference game, we predict Carson Beck will throw for over 400 yards and have his first “Heisman moment” game in his quest for the coveted trophy. Last week, Beck shined once again, throwing for 242 yards and five TDs in just over a half of play. For Kentucky, they have been solid against the pass so far this season, allowing under 175 yards in both games. With that being said, this game should lean towards being one of less offense, but we just cannot get past the idea of Beck’s ability to command a multitude of Georgia’s talented offensive weapons such as Arian Smith, Oscar Delp, and Trevor Etienne. If Beck utilizes said weapons, there’s a high probability that the Bulldogs can fly up and down the field and light up the scoreboard in Kroger Field.
