GEORGIA vs. ALABAMA MATCHUP
The Bulldogs will be making their seventh appearance in the game, and they’re 3-3 including winning the 2017 title over No. 2 Auburn. Georgia has won or shared the SEc eastern Division title nine times. Alabama will be making its 12th SEC Championship Game appearance and is 7-4 all-time in the conference title game. The Bulldogs will be aiming for their 14th SEC title in school history and first back-to-back crowns since winning three straight in 1980-82. Georiga’s 13 SEC titles trail only Alabama’s 26.
Alabama leads the series history over Georgia 39-25-4. The last meeting also took place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The teams met in that venue in last season’s College Football PlayoffNational Championship as the No. 4 Crimson Tide won 26-23 in overtime. Georgia and Alabama last squared off in the SEC Championship game in 2012 and then No. 2 Crimson Tide held on for a 32-28 decision over No. 3 Georgia. The Bulldogs last win over Alabama came in 2007 with a 26-23 overtime victory in Tuscaloosa.
For the second time this season, ESPN College GameDay and SEC Nation will be on site when the Bulldogs play.
Interesting Tidbits about the 2018 Georgia team
— The 2018 Seniors are 42-11 and the 42 wins are tied for third in school history with the 2004 team.
— Georgia’s on pace to set a record for scoring average in a season. The Bulldogs have scored 40+ points in seven games this year. The Bulldogs average 40.1 points per game which is second in the SEC. The 2014 team owns the school record at 41.3 points a game.
–Jake Fromm is a 2018 Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist and a Manning Award finalist. The Manning Awards is an award which is given to the nation’s top quarterback and the only award that takes candidates’ bowl performances into consideration.
— Fromm is hovering around the school record for Completion Percentage. Georgia’s school record is 67.9 completion rate by Hutson Mason in 2014. The SEC record is 72. 3 percent held by Tim Couch from Kentucky. Fromm ranks No. 2 in the SEC and 8th nationally at 69.1 percent. He is 23-3 as the starter, including 8-3 versus top-25 schools.
— Justin Fields enrolled in January and has seen action in 11 games this season. He is 27-38 with 328 yards and four scores. Fields also has 260 yards on 39 carries averaging 6.7 yards a carry and four rushing touchdowns.
— Georgia has a two-headed monster this year at running back that averages 6.7 yards a carry. Elijah Holyfield has 133 carries for 896 yards and seven touchdowns. He averages 6.7 yards a carry. D’Andre Swift has 139 carries for 962 yards and nine scores. He averages 6.9 yards a carry.
— Georgia’s defense is fourth in the SEC and 10th nationally in Scoring Defense allowing 17.2 points a game.
— The Bulldogs returned 51 lettermen from their 2017 squad, including 13 starters. However, Georgia’s is still the SEC’s youngest team and the nation’s 15th youngest team with 68.2 percent being either freshmen or sophomores. There are 58 freshmen (38 True Freshmen/20 RS) and 30 Sophomores.
— Rodrigo Blankenship has set two all-time school career records this year. He’s 58-of-58 in PATs and has made 19-of-22 field goals. Blankenship is second the nation with 74 touchbacks in 88 kickoffs. He has 162 career touchbacks and is on pace to beat Kevin Buttler’s 169 touchbacks. The junior needs 7 to tie Butler’s record with at least two games left in the season. Blankenship has made 147 consecutive PATs and officially is at the top of Georgia’s rankings in most consecutively made PATs.
